Floyd vs Canelo Weight Issue

Post  BoxingGenius on Mon May 13, 2013 12:00 pm

apparently everything has been agreed upon except for the weight. floyd wants it at 147 canelo wants 154 and even offered a catchweight in the middle. i dont see floyd doing a catchweight since he claims he never does catchweights and his too proud to go back on that at this point. now the question is is this fight even worth it at 147? yes it will still sell big just because casual fans dont really think much of weight in terms of draining fighters, but canelo has stamina issues at 154 (probably due to weight cutting fatigue) at 147 he'd be a corpse i think. i understand floyds concerns about canelo rehydrating to 170lbs on fight night which is warranted IMO. and yes floyd is the champ, and generally the challenger goes to the champs weight class not the other way around. (canelo is the champ at 154, but floyd is p4p and the a-side so he is technically the "champ" here) i would absolutely love this fight at 154 mainly because floyd wouldnt be a surefire winner, but at the same time, i understand where he is coming from, that is a huge weight disadvantage on fight night. canelo should not fight him at 147 IMO because he gets peppered into oblivion at that weight. i know its unprecedented but maybe a rehydration clause could appease both? say neither cant weigh more than like 160-165 on fight night. this issue wouldnt arrise if we went back to same day weigh ins!

alvarez isn't long at 154.at 147 indeed he has zero chance..here comes the bullshit guys.floyds potential excuse not to do the fight.looking for the ultimate advantage or its no fight.alvarez wants this fight bad thus a compromise at 151 lets say..yes alvarez indeed will have almost 20 pound advantage fight night..so what.im a strong beliver alvarez cant make 154 with same day weight inns.floyd you want to shoot your mouth off about lol being the greatest of all time.your far from it.take the challenge if you view alvarezs weight a challenge..i realy don't.hes no jake lamotta who weight a hair over 160 fighting robinson who weighed 144..they fought twice in 3 weeks.of course your far from robinson contrary to what some may think today.greb fought 4 or so guys that outweighed him by 20 or more pounds in a year.they simply were top ranked heavys that fought Dempsey later for the title.o rmickey walker shorter then you.a overblown welter who fought top light heavy and heavy contenders that either became champ or was a ex champ..your no greb or walker either.
lets stop calling for a rehydration clause also..ok guys.if its same day weight inn Floyd make weight at 147 or a few pounds more with ease.alvarez wont make weight.period.
take the fight Floyd and stop the bullshit.yes your no robby nor greb nor walker but alvarez doesn't come close to being a jake lamatto a maxim a jack sharkey a loughgran a bill brennen a gene tunney.you will be the favorite in the fight and rightly so.maybe to me only there is no challenge with alvarez.
why no challenge.alvarez is a ok fighter in a awfull division and in a era of mediocrity..floyds a great fighter by anyones standards.haters included.
can it be a hard fight..yep for a while.stanima conditioning physical age not chronological age are all in floyds corner.stop the nonsence.at 147 alvarez gets destroyed.at 154 he simply gets beat.

i agree D, 154 or no fight, but i was just saying i can see where floyd is coming from not wanting to face a guy who weighs over 170 lbs when he will probably be around 152. but floyds skils are light years ahead of canelos, size is canelos only advantage and probably the only reason this fight is interesting to begin with. take the challenge floyd, take 5 more stiff tests and cement your legacy, its now or never. i hope canelo doesnt agree to this 147 bs, hes a young and very talented prospect who doesnt deserve a blemish just because of some bs weight stipulation. kids got a bright future, id hate to see his confidence shot down in a shutout to floyd because hes completely drained at 147

i guess it all depends on what type of image floyd wants for himself. i think that he gets huge props from even haters if he fights at 154 and gets outweighed by nearly 20 on fight night. to me, as dmar said, that is an example of greatness. if he wants to be the best ever like he says he is, he needs to show how great he is by fighting at a disadvantage to show that his skills are so good that weight isnt a factor in whether or not he wins.

i agree that at 147 the fight is ridiculous. canelo probably couldnt even make 147. i literally dont think that he would make the weight at the weigh in. honestly, if floyd just wants to solidify what most people think of him now then thats fine. he can not fight canelo because of a size advantage. he will go down in history as a great fighter. if he actually fights canelo at 154 and beats him and fights solid competition these next few fights, he might move up a few spots in many peoples all time rankings.

so dan rafael reported that the reports of floyd asking for 147 were complete BS. apparently Sr said floyd shouldnt fight him at 154 and the media took it and ran with it. donut dan said schaffer told him weights not an issue its just the $ at this point. lets hope so cuz this would be a very interesting fight at 154. floyd would prob be a 2-1 or 3-1 favorite but thats the closest hes been in a while. love this fight at 154. may be early for canelo as he is green still but we've seen what happens when you wait too long. a fighter can lose. make it now it does huge numbers and we all wanna see it

im sure that canelos team is asking for way more money that floyd is willing to give. to be honest though, canelo is a huge draw in mexico and will get so many more buys because of him. for that, he deserves a good chunk of the money although obviously floyd deserves the bigger half.

I doubt this fight happens. If Canelo thinks he can win (and I do) he should bite the bullet and take less money to put all the pressure on Floyd. A win over Mayweather is worth more in the long term financially and for his legacy than a single payday.

steve kim thinks the weight isn't the biggest issue. It is the money. Floyd seems to like these fights where he can make anywhere from 4 or 5 times the money of the opponent (Cotto) up to 10 times (RG).

Canelo hasn't done his own PPV, but he drew 40,000 or 50,000(can't recall exact number) to San Antonio to watch him. He has done very good HBO or Showtime ratings. Floyd isn't going to be able to tell Canelo here's 6 million, take it.

...I agree captain.alvarez is a star in his own right and should not take short money for the priveldge of fighting Floyd.with alvarez not on the Floyd ppv card well we know what happened there.he would of brought a good 350-500 more ppv buys to the card.its a big Mexican fight day holiday and alvarez is a huge star in that group.
if Sergio Martinez was not injured again alvarez had a strong out.fight him sept 14.that would do a solid 800000 buys head to head against Floyd and the rest like alexander Garcia etc etc.the Floyd fight would struggle to do 900 000..yes that's right.
unfortunetly Martinez isn't avalible for alvarezs ace in the whole.alvarez realizes his popularity and worth and is not going to lay down and be a Floyd puppett.alvarez has done record breaking Mexican tv ratings big crowds his last few fights and strong cable ratings.floyd will want and get 40 million up front.any more he then prices himself out of the fight.alvarez will take 12 million.a 80 dollar ppv or at least 75 will happen.floyd is north Americas biggest star.alvarez move over manny pac is number 2 or a very close number 3..
im hoping alvarez sticks to his guns.

its just going to be very difficult with this whole money situation. i really cant see canelo or his team accepting what floyd is willing to offer. floyd knows that this would be a huge fight and would for sure want a career guaranteed payday. canelo will also want his career payday which will be a high asking price im sure.
