Re: Movie discussion thread
I saw The Thing prequel today, a decent homage to the vastly superior original but it's not bad for a night in. 3.5/5
Limitless - really enjoyed it, nice to see an original fresh movie. 4/5

I watched an old movie "An anatomy of a murder" Excellent movie. It stared James Stewart. I seem to like his movies.

if you get a chance, watch his 5 westerns in the early to mid 1950s, directed by anthony Mann.
Winchester 73
bend of the river
naked spur
far country
man from laramie
and his collaborations with Hitchcock:
rope
rear window
man who knew too much
vertigo
He's also in John Ford's last very good western, the man who shot liberty valance, with John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and Woody Strode.
I'm not a huge Stewart fan, but I liked all of those, especially the highlighted ones. You could also check out his Capra films, especially Mr. Smith goes to Washington.

Re: Movie discussion thread
Valance and Mr. Smith are two of my favorite movies. I have been on a little of an old film kick lately. I think it is because those guys are real actors and I am a little sick of this crap hollywood has been shoving down our throats.captainanddew wrote:Soonermark890 wrote:I watched an old movie "An anatomy of a murder" Excellent movie. the thing I hate about today's movies is the lack of originality.
1- So many of the comedies look the same. They are just dumb.
2-They remake movies that shouldn't be remade. If a movie is 20 years old, it shouldn't be remade.
3-Action movies that are full of slow motion, no plot (just set pieces), and alot of CGI- many good action movies had decent scripts in the past and were shot on location.
Yes, there has always been alot of crap, but to me there is more crap now.

I am with you man. I just dont understand with all the new books that come out every year they should be able to make movies that are original.captainanddew wrote:Soonermark890 wrote:Valance and Mr. Smith are two of my favorite movies. Hagler's Bald Head wrote:Only reason I am slightly interested is because of David Fincher, but yeah it's annoying that they're doing a remake. The original is such a chilling masterpiece.
Not shocked at all that the joke US remake of "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" BOMBED! The movie cost 90 million, not including the massive amount spent on advertising, and only made 12 million it's opening weekend. The fucking Chipmunks movie made more!
What's funny is, Sherlock Holmes is raking in the cash, and features the original Dragon Tattoo chick Noomi Rapace in her US debut.

Yeesh that's a huge catastrophe for the studio, but honestly what did they expect releasing a grim movie like that near Christmas.
$90 million and it looks practically identical to the original.

I liked both because they finally showed Holmes' eccentric side. Holmes is always depicted as the Basil Rathbone version. But in the books, he was much more eccentric. Why people are surprised that "House" is loosly based off of Holmes.
