since sooner brought up the topic of pros and cons in another thread it got me thinking.today in general we see lots of young fighters getting a rep early due to tv buildup like mike jones for example.and we give trainers like freddie roach great praise and yes hes a fantastic trainer but lets think for a while ok..jones for example had a close fight where he punched himself out early after a spirited effort for about a minute then was gassed the rest of the fight..WTF .look its easy to look slick against cherry picked competion and you almost get beat by lack of condition and preperation..
ill give you a example of what a true great trainer does in devloping a fighter..gil clancy for example with emile griffith..griffith in his 17th pro fight took on gasper oretega who was never stoped and into his 72 nd fight.ort ega previouly to that fight fought top welter issac logart 4 times unbeaten ko artist florentine fernandez twice ex welter champ and slugger tony demarco 3 times plus denny moyer benny kid paret and others.this is no cherry picking...look how well conditioned griffith is fighting a fast paced 10 round fight against a experienced solid fighter.
jones was gassed griffith could of went 5 more rounds.griffith fought in a arch controling the center of the ring and real estate by inches.jones has no clue.both ortega and griffith counter punched to the body both landing 40-50 hard shots there..the art of body punching.bobing and weaving.fast one twos.conditioning conditing.griffith had that plus counterpunching agressive non stop pressure feights punching accuracy and more.he was sound tech in his 10th fight..trainers back then did there job.
today they prepare a guy for 3 months for one fight.lol speciaty training.years ago you didnt have that luxury.you fought every month.your trainer develope you to adjust to anything develope all your skills where you were prepared for anything.it took roach 10 years to deveope pac.clancy one year to develope griffith..big differnce..check out griffith and oregas first fight on you tube.you will understand what i mean..oretga had 176 fights stoped only twice.once by griffith in there forth fight and once by italian great sandro mazzinini..as a welter there were 15 or more welters in gaspers time better then him.thats how deep the division was...
the skills even in the top fighters today are mostly incomplete..whats that tell you.great trainers yeah for this era only.and a 3 month prep time for there fighter usualy against competion thats semi hand picked..clancy whitey b ray arcel and others had neither luxury.yet there fighters were more complete and ready..
ready where they fought every style every top fighter often and more then once.rarely did you see a top guy punch himself out.or gassed or dogging it.they came to fight and forced you to fight.well schooled in everything well prepared and very very little hand picked cherry picking.the trainers did there job on short notice...yeah thoses were the great trainers of the ages.

Dmar what do you think has caused this? Other sports becoming huge? Less trainers?

sooner good question.the abc 5 commisions we have today is a main culprit.stay inactive and sooner or later you will jockey a so called title fight.instead of earning it..or worse now 5 champs in one division by one commision giving nobodys with no talent nor developement a title on paper..trainers taking shortcuts cus there fighters do.the mental mindset also we see often.pulling out of fights cancelling fights ignoring contracts etc etc all contribute.the amatuers years ago is where you learned a lot of your craft and developement.today there a joke.slap slap no leverage no body punching there just there to win this shitty 3 round fight instead of learning how to fight and it carries on into the pros.
and yes the trainers.or lack of talent there also im several areas.many times a trainer would develope a kid from the amatuers.today the prima donna called trainers dont in a lot of cases.example mike tyson was schooled and crafted in the amatuers by a expert.today its im not interested cause of tunnel vision the moneys not there in doing that NOW.
working at your craft and staying near your weight and condition was a year round thing..today for the most part its part time.thats why you get part time learning...i can go on and on..great question..DEDICATION ..simple key to success.its not part time.
