Joan Guzman keeps shooting himself in the foot

According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, junior welterweight contender Joan Guzman has tested positive for Furosemide, a diuretic banned in Nevada.
According to the article the Dominican tested positive after his fight versus Jason Davis on the Amir Khan-Marcos Maidana undercard this past December. Both Guzman and Davis were over the agreed upon 141 limit for the fight.
Perhaps Guzman took a page from lightweight contender Ali Funeka. You may recall that Guzman defeated Funeka this past March in the rematch of their controversial but lost the IBF title that was at stake prior to the bout when he weighed in 9 pounds over the 135 pound limit. Funeka received a 9 month suspension from the Nevada State Atheletic Commission after the bout for testing positive for the same diuretic, Furosemide.
The NSAC will determine Guzman's fate later this month.

Guzman has missed weight so many times. He just needs to disappear.

Re: Joan Guzman keeps shooting himself in the foot
Unbeaten junior welterweight Joan Guzman is facing a likely fine and/or suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission after testing positive for the banned diuretic Furosemide following his December bout against Jason Davis.
Guzman has previously won world title fights at 122 lbs and 130 lbs, but his recent battles with the scale have repeatedly damaged his career. In September 2008, Guzman’s world title challenge against unified lightweight champion Nate Campbell was cancelled after Guzman came in 3.5 lbs heavy. In March 2010, Guzman was an astonishing 9 lbs heavy for another lightweight title fight against Ali Funeka. Then after moving to jr welterweight in December 2010, Guzman still came in 4.5 lbs heavy for the above bout against Davis.
The NSAC previously suspended Funeka for nine months after he tested positive for Furosemide, so Guzman will likely be out of the ring for most, if not all, of 2011.

If any signs this guy to a fight under 147, they deserve what comes to them. Maybe he wants that Pac fight he was looking for oh so long ago.

Such a waste of talent, four years ago Joan was a Super Featherweight who had just beaten Humbero Soto.

it is a waste of talent, but he doesn't seem to me to be a fighter who was going to excel past 130 the way he did at lower weights.

Re: Joan Guzman keeps shooting himself in the foot
I thought both Guzman and Funeka had more than a chance against JMM. I might have even favored either of em over him.. Guzman just can't seem to get his act together.. and Funeka, well damn I really liked him until used some happy chemicals to get that frame to boil down to 135...

the thing is these diuretic drugs are seriously dangerous for guys in prizefighting. they take everything out of your body unnaturally. they completely defeat the point of having day before weigh-ins and boxers are walking a tightrope taking these kind of medicines. the whole point of day before weigh ins is to stop fighters dehydrating themselves dangerously. these diuretic drugs are doing exactly that for the fighters but the problem is the drug works within the body for a set period so even if the fighter stops taking the diruetic the day before weigh in, they still have that drug working inside them come fight time. Boxing doesn't need another McClellan type incident in the mainstream

thats why day before weigh ins are a terrible idea. do they actually think that it helps fighters not be so drained? all it does is makes them think that they can drain themselves even more because they have a day to recover.dbudge wrote:the thing is these diuretic drugs are seriously dangerous for guys in prizefighting. they take everything out of your body unnaturally. they completely defeat the point of having day before weigh-ins and boxers are walking a tightrope taking these kind of medicines. the whole point of day before weigh ins is to stop fighters dehydrating themselves dangerously. these diuretic drugs are doing exactly that for the fighters but the problem is the drug works within the body for a set period so even if the fighter stops taking the diruetic the day before weigh in, they still have that drug working inside them come fight time.
