Maidana made a new fan last night
Maidana was suppose to be just another stepping stone to stardom for "wonderkid" Amir Khan and his new trainer Freddie Roach. The problem is, somebody forgot to tell Maidana to lay down and quit after getting dropped by a wicked body shot at the end of the first round. Against all odds Maidana survived the 1st round KD and with guts, toughness and determination came back to make a fight of it. Khan may have won on the scorecards last night, but there's no doubt in my mind who won the "war" and my respect.
Salute! Senor Maidana, Pugs like you are the reason I watch boxing.

I knew he'd give Khan fits. Fights like this make wish we still had 15-rounds.

I must see things differently, I thought Khan was just 1 good punch away from being KTFO again, unfortunately for Maidana, he was too tired or unable to land it.

Khan is very fortunate Cortez was the ref, he saved his ass.

i don't think that anybody thought that this was going to be an easy night for Khan. everybody knew Maidana's quantity, at least Khan took the fight that he was supposed to be ducking and proved his point. and i think he did prove a point last night. yeah there is work still to do but a win is a win

I don't see where Khan proved much of anything, he seems to be a somewhat better fighter since taking on Freddie Roach as his trainer, but the fact is, the last 4 or 5 rounds of this fight, he was running scared and getting his ass handed him. Khan was getting bounced around the ring, pummeled on the ropes, and was one punch away from getting KTFO about a half dozen times, so what point did he make?

As I said on another thread 99% of the time bitching about the ref is unwarranted. But last night Cortez was simply playing too big a role in the outcome by dictating how the fight was to be conducted.

Three things Inthink. First he didn't collapse when he got hot. Second he hit Maidana hard enough he had to take the eighth round off to recover for his last charge. Third, he stood and traded enough late to survive. He showed balls and smarts.

Re: Maidana made a new fan last night
I thoroughly enjoyed the fight. It was matador vs. bull and the bull almost pulled it off. For Maidana to weather the early storm that Kahn threw at him and then continue to come forward & throw bombs showed true grit. Khan did what he had to do. He was fast & accurate, hurt Maidana, got hurt and stayed in there. Khan showed a toughness that I myself doubted that he had. He is flawed, so I doubt he will dominate for long. Maidana proved that he's no fluke either & that he belongs.

Cortez is bias & annoying (so much for him being "fair"), and inept at being a ref in big fights. Rather than watching a fight, you end up watching the Joe Cortez show, the guy is a fucking idiot.

Smarts? You mean like letting yourself be bounced around the ring like a fucking pinball, and then laying on the ropes and getting ripped repeatly with uppercuts? Oh wait, I know, he was just showing us how great his chin was, bloody clever!

LOL!
OK fair point. But Kahn understood the situation and stood and traded enough not to get steamrolled. He understood, I thought, that he couldn't just run and survive. Mr. Maidana was like a runaway bus.

A bit like a "wild bull" on the Pampas perhaps?

I just got annoyed how Cortez kept allowing Khan to push Maidian down everytime he got close.
Seriously, after two warnings, take a point.

Re: Maidana made a new fan last night
I honestly thought Maidana was DONE after that body shot; couldn't believe the fight went on to be that good. Guy has serious toughness and power. Just needs to get his wind up a bit, if he didn't run out of gas he would have KO'd Kahn no doubt.
I agree Cortez was terrible, but no news there from the Hall of Famer
Kahn showed heart but didn't exactly fight smart. Still, he's got all the whole package to be a star, that's for sure.
I'm looking forward to seeing both guys again (and hopefully Cortez never again)

I don't see the "star" part, and I don't see Khan's performance Saturday as being one to write home about. Maidana was knocking Khan around like he was his bitch in the later rounds, especially the 10th, when Khan was beaten like a redheaded stepchild and out on his feet.
Khan is another Brit media darling, but the reality is, he's been overhyped, and although he's in the mix, he's not going to be dominate at 140. BTW, he'd get absolutely destroyed if he ever moves up to welterweight.

What I mean by "star" is that the guy is totally marketable and even though he didn't fight a great fight on Saturday he showed he's got good handspeed, power and heart. He'll make interesting fights and he'll sell tickets. May not dominate in any division, but he could be a very popular fighter nonetheless.
I agree he was staying at 135 for a reason and may end up back there.

Too chinny at 135. He'll be alright at 140, he's only 24. He's going to be a star. I know that ring hates these arrogant guys but he is one of them and he will be huge.

I'd agree with Khan being "marketable", especially with Freddie Roach training him, and HBO & the Brit media hyping him, I just don't ever see him being a dominate force in pro boxing. BTW, I do think Khan is good for boxing, i'll grant him that.
