A point that "MUST" be made.
Please, bear with me here. This is not a hate "Floyd Mayweather" thread. It is a question I'm posing to any and every boxing fan on this board.
Boxing's attraction to the public, for the most part, is based on name fighters with special abilities. The more boxers we have that meet this description, the hotter boxing is. Names and stars (Love em or hate em) are welcomed with a red carpet type of treatment. That said, can anyone recall a name fighter that the majority of boxing fans were glad to see go in his prime? Honest question. I can only think of one and we all know who that is. However, have there been any others who, while they were gifted as figthers, had their exit applauded when they were still able to compete? This is rather hypothetical because Mayweather has yet to formally retire, yet nobody seems to even remotely notice his absence.

I'm fairly certain that Kelly Pavlik has fallen from grace while still in his prime & his fans are dangerously close to abandoning him already.

Glad to go because they hated him? I dunno. In 1967 most folks were pretty fed up with Muhammad Ali weren't they?

All due respect Marble, but Ali was hated for different reasons. The 60's were a tumultuous, racially charged decade. Ali was the enemy to the powers that be. Plus, Ali wanted to fight. Unlike these trinket holders that keep these belts held hostage for God knows what reasons. If Floyd went away I doubt too many fans of Boxing would cry.marbleheadmaui wrote:Glad to go because they hated him? I dunno. In 1967 most folks were pretty fed up with Muhammad Ali weren't they?

I'm not happy to see him go. I enjoy watching him fight and I really want to see him against Pacquiao.

Not glad to see him go because they hated him. Some folks love to hate. Happy to see him go because he got in the way.marbleheadmaui wrote:Glad to go because they hated him? I dunno. In 1967 most folks were pretty fed up with Muhammad Ali weren't they?
Example. When Frazier - Ali I occured, it was the biggest fight up to it's time. Love him or hate him, people wanted to see Ali fight. He always obliged them. Mayweather is the first major talent I've ever seen get in the way of major fights and have a negative effect on the game because he just doesn't want to fight one guy. There have been plenty of guys who've ducked opponents, however how many have been known as the "greatest fighter in the world" at anytime during their career? I don't know of one.
