Morales withdraws from Garcia fight

Junior welterweight titlist Erik Morales, recovering from gallbladder surgery last week, formally withdrew from his title defense against Danny Garcia on Monday.
Morales was due to make his first defense against Philadelphia's Garcia at Reliant Arena in Houston on Jan. 28 in the main event of the first HBO card of 2012.
After last Wednesday's surgery, Morales held out hope that he would be cleared to resume training in time to go through with the fight. However, his doctor recommended on Monday that he not fight, Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez told ESPN.com.
Gomez said Morales wanted to go through with the bout.
"He said, if necessary, he would go against his doctor's orders but we wouldn't let him do that, and he probably wouldn't pass his medicals anyway if they knew he just had surgery," Gomez said.
The status of the card remains up in the air, Gomez said. He said that Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer was talking to HBO to see what the options are -- a replacement fight, a new opponent for Garcia, a postponement or an outright cancellation.
"I don't think HBO wants to do a replacement fight or go with a stand-alone (televised) fight," Gomez said. "In an area like Houston, with a lot of Latinos, a lot of Mexicans, you need Erik Morales on that card, so it's a big blow to us. I don't know what's going to happen."
Gomez said that Morales hopes that the bout can simply be postponed for about a month.

LOL nice poster Grant.
Wise move for Erik, IMO he should only being featuring in lucrative fights at his stage in his career.
I wonder if Morales would accept a fight with Khan after watching the Peterson fight.
