Pavlik returns March 31 ...Then Chavez?
Former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (37-2, 32 KOs) will return on April 14th at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The fight will be a ten round bout at 166-pounds, reportedly against Scott Sigmon (21-3, 12 KOs) of Lynchburg, Va. Lightweights Yuriorkis Gamboa and Brandon Rios will headline the show in an HBO televised main event. Pavlik, inactive since May 7, is now trained by Robert Garcia of Oxnard, California.
Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum confirmed the fight, but not the opponent, to Pavlik's hometown paper, The Vindicator. Pavlik will have at least two tune-up bouts, and then a possible title fight at 160-pounds, against WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who is also promoted by Top Rank.
"There's a lot of rust," Arum said. "We want to see how he handles the weight. Garcia said there's no problem getting him back down to 160 so if it looks like he's back [after the two fights], then we'll make a pay-per-view fight against Chavez."

That's a horrible match-up for Bum Jr. If Arum puts him in against Pavlik, he's cashing Bum Jr out. Pavlik may be on the decline, bu Bum Jr is a come-foward fighter that has no real defense and get's hit a lot. I don't care if Bum Jr got a good chin. If he eats nothing but Pavlik's rights, he's going to get deal with.

Arum has Pavlik and Chavez Jr. He knows there is going to be a call for Chavez to step it up further late this year or first 1/4 of next year. I think Arum would rather put Chavez Jr. in with Pavlik so that he has both fighters rather than against Martinez or Canelo.
Chavez Jr. loses to Pavlik, then Arum gets Pavlik another big fight (more money for Bob).

Yeah, he could hype Pavlik up Rocky style. "Everybody loves a Comeback." Then the montage of him beating on tires in Youngstown and shit.

the other thing to keep in mind is Chavez Jr. won't be able to make 160 much longer. He will struggle mightily at 168 for a couple of reasons: 1-He won't be the big bad bully to the same degree as he is at 160 (where he outweighs guys by 10-12 pounds in the ring), 2-the top 10 guys at 168, are much better as a whole than the top 10 guys at 160. Chavez might beat some fringe 168 pounders but I would be rather suprised to see him beating more than 1-2 top 10 guys there.

Against Pavlik he will be the smaller man. 6'2, Pavlik at this age will likely show up to fight in the high 170s.

Pavlik should stay at 168 IMO. I still like the Abraham fight.

Pavlik must really look like Shit if Arum is giving him a shot at Chavez. They should bill this one as "The Bar Room Brawl".

+1 there's also been lesser opponents that have went the distance with Pavlik. IMO Chavez beats Pavlik. Pavlik is not the same guy that won the middleweight championship years ago.hardcorebee24 wrote:Pavlik must really look like Shit if Arum is giving him a shot at Chavez. Pavlik will have to look poor in these lead up fights to get JCC Jr.

All about styles man. Those lesser opponents used movements and fought to survive. They didn't stand there and try to out bully Pavlik or come staight at him. That's all Bum Jr knows how to do.

I just don't see Chavez having a chance to win this fight. Even vs. a broken Kelly Pavlik.
However, this would be a legitimate fight for Chavez Jr. If he were to win, it would make a fight vs. Martinez more realistic.

Arum is never ever putting Chavez Jr. in vs Martinez. THey won't even let Chavez face Lee because he is a southpaw.

Kelly Pavlik to return against Aaron Jaco this month
Three months after Kelly Pavlik changed trainers and relocated to Oxnard, Calif., as part of the effort to straighten out his life and save his career, the former middleweight champion is set for his first fight in 10 months.
Pavlik will return to the ring to face Aaron Jaco in San Antonio, manager Cameron Dunkin said Thursday. The fight will take place in March at Illusions Theater, a 3,700-seat venue at the Alamodome, Top Rank spokesman Lee Samuels told ESPN.com.
The fight is scheduled for 10 rounds with a contract weight of 170 pounds, but Dunkin said the weight -- heavier than usual for Pavlik -- was a consideration for Jaco and that Pavlik, who aims to fight in either the 168-pound super middleweight division, or perhaps even return to the 160-pound middleweight division, would come in under the weight.
"He's going to fight and he's just excited," Dunkin said.
Pavlik's career has been knocked off course by a battle with alcohol. Since losing the middleweight championship to Sergio Martinez in April 2010, Pavlik has fought just once, had two stints in rehab and was arrested on a DUI charge.
In his last fight in May 2011, on the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley undercard, Pavlik (37-2, 32 KOs) won a decision against Alfonso Lopez in what was supposed to be a return to regular activity.
But after he was scheduled to fight in August, he withdrew from Showtime's "ShoBox: The New Generation" main event just days before the fight because he was unhappy with the deal. With that withdrawal, Pavlik also threw away a $1.35 million deal to challenge super middleweight titlist Lucian Bute in November, angering Top Rank.
In an effort to get back on track last fall, Pavlik, his father and co-manager Mike Pavlik and Dunkin met with Top Rank officials in New York to try to work on things. They decided that Pavlik would leave his hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, and break from career-long trainer Jack Loew in favor of relocating to Oxnard to begin training with Robert Garcia, who trains some of boxing's top fighters, including Brandon Rios, Nonito Donaire and Mikey Garcia (his younger brother).
Pavlik, with an apparent re-dedication to boxing and his drinking under control, made the move in January and has been training at Garcia's Oxnard Boxing Academy since.
Although Dunkin said he talks to Pavlik on the telephone regularly, he had a chance to see him on Tuesday in Los Angeles, where Top Rank was holding a news conference to discuss Rios' next fight.
Pavlik made the drive from Oxnard to the press conference.
"For Kelly to drive down by himself, it just shows you how much he's into boxing again and wants to be around it," Dunkin said. "He was laughing and joking. He looked so good. He said to me, 'I've never trained like this consistently. I've been training six days a week. I get a good night's sleep. I'm in bed by 9 o'clock. I'm on a health kick. I'm eating the right foods.' Kelly said he was 173 pounds but after he works out he'll be down at 169. His weight is good.
"He said, 'I work two hours a day just on moving my head and reacting to punches.' Robert has told he can't get anyone to really spar with Kelly except for (2008 Olympian) Alfonso Blanco because he's hurting everyone he spars with."
If Pavlik, who turns 30 on April 4, comes through the March 31 fight, Dunkin said he would return in June. Possible dates include June 8 on ESPN2 in Las Vegas or on the June 9 Pacquiao-Timothy Bradley Jr. undercard in Las Vegas.
"If everything goes OK, Kelly will fight again in June and then come back in the fall and, hopefully, have a real, real fight," Dunkin said.
The March 31 fight will take place on the untelevised portion of a "Top Rank Live" card on Spanish-language network Azteca America. "Top Rank Live" had been on Fox Espanol but the series is moving to Azteca America this year, according to Top Rank president Todd duBoef.
Jaco (15-2, 5 KOs), 34, of Sarasota, Fla., will be taking a big step up in competition but has won two fights in a row after losing back-to-back bouts. However, he fought only once in 2011 after not fighting since 2006.
Jaco's father, Dave Jaco, was a journeyman heavyweight in the 1980s and early 90s who fought a who's who of the division, including losses to Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Buster Douglas, Tommy Morrison, Razor Ruddock and Tony Tucker.
In the March 31 main event, featherweight Alejandro Lopez faces Evgeny Gradavich with junior lightweight prospect Casey Ramos meeting Gerardo Robles in the co-feature.

That's some Gamboa shit right there.

Doesn't say he quit drinking.

Pavlik, even in his current state of decline, if he has anything left in the tank at all, should beat Bum Jr. That's truly how bad Bum Jr really is.
Hopefully KP makes some money fighting Bum Jr., because I don't see him beating any of the top SMWs...

I don't see him beating the top super mws either. He has slow feet and hands. He has the decline from inactivity and drinking.
Most importantly, Pavlik, Abraham, etc... were not beating great competition in the past at 160!!!! Beat JT but that is about it. The guys at 168 at the top are very fucking good. The guys at 160 over the past 4-5 yrs were so so at best.

I expected Kelly Pavlik to ease back into action, but Aaron Jaco, who's 15-2 (5) w/ just one fight since 2006, isn't even a gym workout!

nigel speaks the truth.
I hope his new training team has a plan in mind. If this guy is the opening bout in a comeback, then he needs at least 3 fights before facing someone legit. Assuming he steamrolls Jaco, they should have him back in the ring in May.

I wonder how a third Pavlik vs. Taylor fight would look now, in the rematch JT was winning before he gassed in those last two rounds.
