HBO wants Berto-Alexander
HBO is interested in matching newly-crowned IBF welterweight beltholder Andre Berto against southpaw former WBC/IBF junior welterweight titleholder Devon Alexander, who signed with Golden Boy Promotions on Friday night.
The 24-year-old Alexander (22-1, 13 KOs) is rising into the welterweight division, where he and the 28-year-old Berto (28-1, 22 KOs) may soon be paired for a 147-pound tournament either on HBO or Showtime, that is, if Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has his way.
A possible Berto-Ortiz rematch has been mentioned, but Alexander's camp wants Berto first.
"It was proposed to us whether or not we would consider challenging Berto for the title, and we're ready and willing," said Alexander's trainer, Kevin Cunningham. "So there is no need for Berto to try to fight Victor Ortiz next."

Good fight, Id take Berto in this one. He does struggle with southpaws though so this should be a good fight.

I'm the only guy on the board that likes both of these guys and wants the fight in the Lou. I would definitely go

If I'm Berto I refuse to fight in the Lou. Unless you KO Alexander you probably won't win. And if you were to KO him, you might end up with the ref saying it was a headbutt ala what happened to Sergio Martinez when he KO'd Cintron.

Yup, HBO will pay each guy double what they should be paid. If not more.

only problem is they will destroy their budget by paying at least twice what Showtime would pay for the fight.

Come on guys. If HBO wants to blow their budget to give me quality fights to attend 20 mins from home, I ask you "Who are we to complain?"

Right!? its a horrible fight and best believe they will get paid a lot for it. Alexander cant punch for shit and is boring as fuck. He brings no threat to Berto.Gumby wrote:There goes the budget.

Paulie gots KO's too and so did Floyd last Saturday. Fact is Alexander doesnt sit on his punches, too much shoe shinning for me. Berto will walk through his punches.hardcorebee24 wrote:Diego408 wrote:Right!? its a horrible fight and best believe they will get paid a lot for it. We'll see. HBO will have new managment come next year. Remember, Greenburg gone. So if Davis goes, and they get someone qualified for the job, maybe not.
A lot to ride on considering HBO's recent history.

Cosme Rivera knocked Berto down. Berto doesn't walk through shit. He's regularly out of shape and had feet and stamina issues. If he wins, great. I'll be picking him but when was the last time you saw Berto look good against a southpaw? I guess he looked great against a well past his prime Carlos Quintana.

Rivera is a big Welter. Alexander is a Jr Welter, he wont be able to hurt Berto. Its just not a good fight IMO. Put Berto with a pressure fighter and it will be entertianing, the Alexander fight wont.hardcorebee24 wrote:Diego408 wrote:Paulie gots KO's too and so did Floyd last Saturday. Re: HBO wants Berto-Alexander
Hardcore, you have to realize that most people will not be completely rational when ranking fighters or fights. I am Devon's # 1 fan but I know he could easily have gotten 3 straight L's. However, I also know he fought guys with an average ranking of 4 or 5 in the division.
This has the potential to be a pretty good fight. Berto is a flawed, athletic Haymon fighter. Alexander is a flawed, athletic GBP fighter who gets hometown decisions. Alexander may not turn over on his punches but he does have a high workrate. Berto has a susceptible chin and runs out of gas. Who gets the decision if its in the STL? Will Alexander hold up against a powerful 147 lber? Will he put more on his punches at the new weight? Will Berto run out of gas? I think something that gets lost in the cries of overprotection of Berto and hometown decisions of Alexander is they both have heart. Berto gutted out the championship rounds against Collazo, fought through injury against Quintana, and kept coming against Ortiz. Alexander got cut early and cramped up late against Kotelnik but threw 1113 punches. He got knocked down early against Matthysse and was getting rocked in later rounds but he also fought through it. Yes, Devon should've finished the Bradley fight but he got both eyes cut and more from headbutts. He was overmatched by triple-fisted Bradley.

Wrong again, Hes been a Welter for along time. I can still remember his fight with Judah which was a long time ago. He may of fought there, but that was like a decade ago. Now hes flirting with jr Middle.hardcorebee24 wrote:Diego408 wrote:Rivera is a big Welter. Alexander is a Jr Welter, he wont be able to hurt Berto. Its just not a good fight IMO. His last fight was at 140 for a regional strap.

He just fought Antonio Pitalua at Jr Welter and will be fighting him again at Jr Welter in November. Seriously, get your facts straight young man. I think the heaviest he ever fought was 150. It doesn't matter anyway because it's Cosme fucking Rivera.

Re: HBO wants Berto-Alexander
If you check out the link, hes been fighting at Welter for 10 years before coming back at 140. My point still stands, Alexander wont be much of a threat to Berto at welter and Im glad Lou came out and said he was interested in it becuase not many people are. Cosme may of dropped him, but he still went 12 with Ortiz whos a big puncher himslef.hardcorebee24 wrote:Diego408 wrote:Wrong again, Hes been a Welter for along time. I understand that Diego. He's not a big welter who is flirting with 154 like you said. Just fall on your sword and say that Cosme Rivera is a journey man that dropped Andre Berto and exposed his vulnerable chin and less than stellar defense.
