Khan says he will fight Mayweather next year

Amir Khan, still looking for an opponent at junior welterweight, told a British newspaper that he expects to move up to the welterweight division and face Floyd Mayweather Jr. sometime in 2012.

And, naturally, both he and trainer Freddie Roach say they believe he’d win the fight.

“For me to be considered the best, I have to go in there against the best,” Khan told The Telegraph. “I want to be right up there fighting at elite level, to show people how good I am. I believe I have the tools to beat Mayweather. I have faster hand speed than him, and a better punch.

“No one is denying that he is technically brilliant and very smart. But I’ll get there because I have the best trainer in the world in Freddie Roach. I think Mayweather will happen in 2012.”

Said Roach: “There are two boxers I train who could beat Floyd Mayweather. One of them is Manny Pacquiao. The other one is Amir Khan.”

First things first, though. Khan, the WBA junior welterweight titleholder, still wants to unify the 140-pound titles this year. The question is: Who will he fight?

Timothy Bradley has told The Desert Sun that he will not fight Khan on July 23, the original target date for the fight.

Other than that, there are no immediate big-money fights at 140 pounds available.

One option Khan will not consider at any time, he said, is a showdown with gym mate Pacquiao.

“There will never be a fight between Manny and me,” he told The Telegraph. “We respect each other too much. It wouldn’t feel right.”

this is assuming Floyd is fighting again. And as long as he has been sitting, if he doesn't get a fight signed pretty soon, he will need a tune up (as he will have been sitting for 18 months by November).

its possible for khan to win the fight if mayweather doesnt fight until that fight but i dont think that mayweather will fight anymore unless he stays out of jail and is about to go bankrupt and needs cash.

Khan won me over with this whole Bradley thing! People questioned his chin and toughness so he fought the Beast Maidana then called out and signed on to fight the best 140lb out there in Bradley only for Bradley to punk out! Maidana is calling him out and Judah is out there but Maidana struggled with EM and Judah is ranked #6 at the moment! Man the fuck up Bradley!

Khan won me over when he chose to fight Maidana. Maidana was the last guy a person with a questionable chin like Khan would want to fight. But he did. And won.

agreed, but it is still a dangerous fight for Khan. Zab throws one hell of a quick left uppercut. If Khan is stupid enough to not keep Zab on the end of his jab, and lets him get in close enough to get it off early, Zab can turn the fight. I favor Khan big, but it isn't a gimme fight.

I'm all for Amir Khan, however I think Mayweather's reputation would go to hell if he fought him. (a)At this point, if FM fights anyone but Pacqiao, he'll look like a complete coward.

(b) Amir Khan is a Freddie Roach fighter. According to the MW's, Khan is not being served steroids while Pacqiao is, though they have the same trainer? Sure, you can make an argument for anything, nevertheless most people would call bullshit on this.

By next year it'll be quite a while since Floyd fought anyone; especially a guy the size of Khan. I like him, but I'm still not sold that Khan has the skills to hang with him (unless Floyd really has lost a step or two).

I would love to see that fight, especially after Khan gets a fight to season and a fight to test the waters at 147. Might be easier to make than Pac v. Floyd.

Khan has a very special combination of skill, speed, power, and length but his chin is still his weakness. I'm one of the very few that probably reduced my opinion of him after the Maidana fight. I thought he was skilled enough to box circles around Maidana but he ended up losing several rounds and almost getting KO'ed in the 10th. That being said, Khan is the best at 140 and would outbox Bradley and destroy my boy Alexander.

That was all bravado from Khan, Amir wanted to make a statement about his chin because he was sick of everyone talking about it.
