http://www.badlefthook.com/2011/4/7/2096505/khan-mccloskey-kicked-off-of-uk-ppv-sky-sports

BoxRec News is reporting that the April 16 fight in Manchester between Amir Khan and Paul McCloskey is likely to be removed from the schedule of Sky Box Office, the pay-per-view version of Sky Sports, as promoters have failed to secure a suitable co-feature fight for the card. This comes after an accepted middleweight fight between Matthew Macklin and Khoren Gevor was canceled, and an apparent abandonment of talks to match UK heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury with former world champion Hasim Rahman.

Currently, Sky Sports' web site is not even listening Khan-McCloskey on their upcoming schedule, but the BoxRec News article suggests that Khan-McCloskey would simply air on regular Sky Sports. The fight will air in the United States on tape delay that night on HBO, paired with a live fight between Andre Berto and Victor Ortiz.

If true, can U.S. fans imagine this ever happening with a major PPV event here? Generally speaking, while the major event undercards are rarely anything special in the States, they do have "acceptable" fights and matchups, and our biggest beef is generally that the fights are simply better suited to something like Friday Night Fights. But can you imagine if, say, Pacquiao-Margarito was moved over to regular old HBO if the Rigondeaux-Cordoba fight was called off last November? It's such a foreign concept to me. But then so is paying £15 for a pay-per-view, I guess.

Good news for you guys overseas

amazing.kahn could care less as long as his minimum pay day is met.i disagree a bit that the usa undercards are just exceptible like the ghost-katsidis fight a undercard fight is better then the kahn fight as well as the main event card its fighting on.

WBA light-welterweight champion Amir Khan is said to be furious at Sky’s decision to move his pay-per-view fight with challenger Paul McCloskey on April 16th to Sky Sports 3 and it is thought the move could shrink his purse from £1.25 million pounds to around £250,000.

Reports have already surfaced that Khan Promotions are demanding an explanation about Sky’s decision after efforts by Hatton Promotions to fill the fight card with the likes of Tyson Fury, Rendall Munroe and Gary Buckland have not persuaded head of Sky Sports Barney Francis from removing the PPV status of the fight.

Khan fans who cannot make it to the MEN Arena are said to be delighted at not having to pay the £14.95 booking fee for the fight, but fans who have paid up to £300 are feeling short-changed at the lack of title action on the bill.

So far, only Craig Watson and Martin Murray are involved in title fights on the undercard, with the British welterweight title and the WBA International middleweight titles up for grabs on the night. Tyson Fury is still expected to box on the card, but it is highly unlikely that any title will be on the line.

Amir Khan v Paul McCloskey is live on Sky Sports 3 on Saturday April 16th at 9pm.

Ouch!

Khan/GBP Promotions lol, what a joke

Thing is, you can't do that in the US because there so many other options a promoter can do if say HBO refuses to make a fight PPV. Arum would just put it on his Top Rank PPV, and there are a lot other nich PPV outlets a promoter could go.

However, having the fight not supported by a big network like HBO or Showtime, will diminish PPV sales. But HBO would never turn down a big name PPV in fear they'd just go to their competitor, Showtime. Like what Pac-Mosley did.

Sky it seems pretty much has a monopoly in the boxing market in the UK.

What I'm thinking. Sky would've never done this if it was Ricky Hatton. But, There is Only One Ricky Hatton

With the right opponent Khan can sell, but not when he's facing Paul McCloskey.

Guarantee you Khan vs Bradley will be a PPV.

Khan vs. Bradley will sell globally. This just proof that they should have supported Khan's bullshit fight with a strong , stacked undercard.

I actually like this move, why support a shitty fight on PPV to begin with?

The fans who bought tickets for the fight at high prices are the ones that are really getting burned here

Yeah Gomez is right, the main even isn't PPV worthy.

If it was Khan vs Prescott II then you're right Panther Golden Boy should stack the undercard.

I still don't think McCloskey deserves a title shot, so fuck it, now they have to pony up more money.

I don't think he deserves a shot either, wish Peterson would have been sensible and accepted the offer.

the promotional efforts for this fight have been pathetic, very amateurish and last minute. surely GBP should be paying more of an interest into selling their star to his core market rather than letting somebody else deal with it. ha

It seems to me like Golden Boy are only concerned with the North American market.

Amir Khan out of pocket as boxing fans vote with their feet following Audley Harrison fiasco

The fall-out from the Audley Harrison fiasco is temporarily knocking Amir Khan off the pay-TV money-go-round.

The paying public’s angry reaction to Harrison’s inertia in his world heavyweight title non-fight with David Haye has led to a re-think about which boxing events can draw a pay-per-view audience.

A sense that they were robbed by the timid performance which followed Harrison’s brash sales talk appears, also, to have made the fans more wary of the traditional pre-fight hype.

Khan’s homecoming bout with unbeaten Irish challenger Paul McCloskey at the MEN arena was a marginal pay-TV candidate from the outset and the proposed shift to Sky’s normal subscription cable channel suggests that advance sales have been sluggish.

Sky Sports have always had excellent coverage and provided the fans with exactly what we desire as paying customers. i'd be lost without Sky Sports. Adam Smith, head of boxing at Sky, is a genuine die-hard boxing fan and since he has taken over Sky have really put on some great shows on regular PPV. Khan and Golden Boy should blame this on themselves, Golden Boy left Hatton to sort out the undercard, probably used Hatton for his MEN arena connections and then did nothing else. they have done next to no pressers, no flyers, no advertising, no TV appearances/radio appearances.

Khan fucked off to the US saying about how the British fans never got behind him and how they were all racist towards him etc etc. why would British fans remain loyal to somebody that dissed them like that?? British fans are loyal, just not stupid. it's funny because Amir Khan did a massive interview with Boxing News magazine about "why i'm a box-office star", which was released yesterday at the same time as the Sky's announcement. if you want to be a box office star then you have to stay in the public eye, Khan pissed off to the US and now he just has an arrogant persona about him. it's his own fault. and they've left it until just over a week before the fight before realising that this is going to bomb on box-office. the reason... this event hasn't been promoted. it is not Sky's job to promote Amir Khan's fight, that is Golden Boy's job and once again they failed big time!!! i'm glad this has happened, hopefully it is a sign of good things to come
