Burns retains WBO title

WBO super featherweight champion Ricky Burns (31-2, 8 KOs) scored a hard fought seventh round TKO over Joseph Laryea (14-5, 11 KOs) to retain his belt on Saturday night at the Braehead Arena in Glasgow, Scotland. Laryea had his moments in round four, but Burns had taken command when a tiring Laryea quit on his stool citing a hand injury after round seven.

On the undercard, super middleweight James DeGale (10-0, 8 KOs) scored a fifth round TKO over Alpay Kobal (7-13-2, 5 KOs) and super featherweight Paul Appleby (17-2, 11 KOs) beat Youssef Al Hamidi (8-31-2, 1 KO) on points in a six rounder.

Missed the fight but good to hear Burns was victorious. It's time he unified or fought a top ten guy next, that's two easy defenses he's had in a row.

And the Coatbridge ace is desperate to lift the coveted Ring Magazine belt.

He added: "Everybody knows I would love to fight for that belt. They have Fana ranked No.1 and I'm No.2. I'm sure he would love to unify the decision as well.

"Any boxer would want to fight for that Rocky belt, as we call it. I'd love to have it wrapped round my waist.

"After the Martinez fight Fana's camp said all Frank Warren had to do to make it happen was get in touch. So fingers crossed he can pull it off.

"Airdrie's stadium would be ideal. It's five minutes from my house and I'm sure we could get that packed out with 14 or 15,000."

i think Burns actually put in a solid Champion's performance. before the Martinez fight nobody could see Burns being where he is now but he seems to be relishing being a champion and the thought of becoming the undisputed Champ is clearly taking him to new levels. Laryea was a tall 130lber (5'11) rangey with good power. he really tried to put it on Burns from the opening but the Scot showed the same grit and toughness that got him through 12 rounds with Martinez. Burns work to the body and combination punching was impressive as were his speed and timing. Burns still has vulnerabilities as he is open at times and lacks KO power. he definitely needs to take advantage of what is really a weak 130lb division before guys like JuanMa decide to move up. i think Burns' unnoticed advantage at the weight however is his size. he really is big for the weight and seems to take shots really well. i actually don't see Fana being the biggest threat to Burns in the division, i think that is Martinez, which is why Warren needs to make Burns - Fana a.s.a.p. on the whole though it was a resilient and champion's performance from Burns in what was a relatively decent scrap. Burns comes to fight and i don't think he will be in another dull match-up

I'm realy rooting for this kid to become the real Champ. He deserves it.

And I'm shocked Ali was not at the fight to root him on. What kind Scot are you Ali heh

Not really a huge fan of Burns, I was impressed with his performance vs Martinez but I don't really think he's anything special.

I will try and attend one of Burns fights if he faces a top Super Featherweight.

You won't even go if he faces Fana? Come on, not like Scotland full of great fighters at the moment. And that'd be a real Championship fight.

How far is Airdrie's stadium from where you're at Ali?

Looks like just outside of Glasgow, and is home of Airdrie United F.C.
