Bradley-Khan deal close...date July 23rd
A title-unification fight between Timothy Bradley and Amir Khan on July 23 on HBO is a step closer to reality, according to Gary Shaw, Bradley’s co-promoter.
Shaw said he and Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions, which represents Khan, have a “deal in principle” in place.
The preliminary agreement was confirmed by Cameron Dunkin, Bradley’s manager, who said his fighter is willing to extend his contract with Shaw and Thompson Boxing to make the fight happen. The contract expires in June.
This is only the first step in negotiations. The fighters must still review the terms before signing off on any agreement.
“Nothing is done until that happens,” Shaw said.
Khan also must defeat unbeaten Irishman Paul McCloskey on April 16 at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester, England, which he is expected to do.
Shaw said he and Schaefer didn’t discuss a site, although it will take place in the United States.
“Khan wants this fight; Timmy is open to fighting anyone,” Dunkin said. “(Golden Boy) came to us and said this is the fight HBO wants. Gary said (to Bradley), ‘Would you be willing to extend our agreement long enough to get this fight done?’ Timmy told us to go ahead and pursue it.
“We’re not that far along but this is very, very doable fight.”

This fight will get made because HBO is asking for it. A lot of money on the table for GBP and Shaw for them not to make, even Bradley is willing to stay with with his promotional company a while longer for it. I know a lot of people here bash HBO because of how they handled certain fighters, but it looks like their coming out with a different approach. I mean we aint seeing no more Angulo, Kirkland, Ortiz, Arreola, Guerrero, Berto and other high profile fighters in over paid tune up contests (Khans next fight doesnt really count). Shit they even let Pacquaio walk with his shameful fight with Mosley. They werent even founding Marquez-Morales. Theyve already made top fighters face each Bradely-Alexander (Jan), Montiel-Donaire (Feb), Martinez-SD (Mar), Khan (April) against a top 10 fighter (even though he stands no chance) and give some credit to Berto-Ortiz (the match up is more appealing than most think, it will seperate the pretneder from real champ.) Even Pascal-Hopkins in May, HBO at least has one great meaningful fight for every month.
Canelo vs Hatton is shameful though, but theyre just trying to build up Mexicos next great attraction. Canelo is probably in the top 5 in boxing as recognizable names in the sport.

What you talking about! HBO wanted that fight, but Arum took his talent to Showtime. The CEO of HBO even got involved in a desperate attempt to get the fight.
A big reason why Arum did this was HBO's total favortism with GB. Rejecting Cotto against Martirosyan, so Arum got a name, Mayorga, and HBO rejected that one too. Same Cotto who gave HBO their highest ratings last year.
HBO got Pascal vs Hops II, after rejecting the first fight, which Showtime showed. Once again, HBO getting Showtime's sloppy seconds, and gurantee for more then what Showtime paid for it

this is positive news..good for both fighters and bradley to extend his contract for this fight..we will have a real 140 pound champ in a hot division and done the right way..a unoffical tourney of the top 4 evolved..bradely1 vs alexander 3 kahn 2 vs maidana 4 and the 2 winners meeting..another suprize is the fight being in the usa..good for kahns folks for doing that also..vegas the garden the prudential center even cowboy statium are good possibilites to bid on the fight..there may be a few others to throw there hats in the ring also..
hbo does have a good calender of events coming up no matter how they got them..the potential neck and neck rivalry between hbo and showtime is good for boxing..out of neccesity hbo has to deliver a upgraded calender of events.now if angulo can get his legal status in order and kirkland can make a solid transition then look for the 154 pounders to start heating up..this can be a very good year..

Khan better crush McCloskey...
A bad performance on his part after Bradley-Alexander will not help HBO lol

And that won't change if you don't make an effort to build a fanbase in America. If Khan keeps providing gutsy performances like he did in December he'll soon gain fans.

Its still a big fight event if it happens in the UK
No point to lose $ as a promoter/fighter by staging in the US
Who cares if he doesnt develop a fan base out here, he's a got a sell out venue at home

It would seem to me to be a bigger money fight in the UK. Bradley is known there for knocking Witter tfo, and the Sky PPV revenue would more than make up for the lower HBO fee.

Yeah, should be in the UK. I don't know how big Khan's fan base in UK is, but it's bigger then either of them in the US.

I'm not an expert on his base but if you put together a good undercard this has to draw at least 15k at the least (probably significantly more).

HAving the fight in US is a bad idea. Neither of them are draws here. And we don't need another good fight in a half empty casinio or venue.
That's what media latches onto and undermines the fight.

+1
Big crowds means even BIGGER event
Big fight in empty venue means another flop for boxing (in the media's eyes)
