I started laughing when she got the lyrics wrong. If you're gonna add 2000 notes to a simple melody? At least get the words right.

At least she wasnt as bad as the halftime show. DAMN Fergie can not sing one note.

Fergie and Gwen Stefani are awful live. Surprisingly Pink is excellent.

the obvious choice for best is marvin gaye, so im gonna go the crazy route, Im going with Whitney Houston becuause the one thing that automatically kills the anthem is Divaness, the ultimate Diva straight up killed the anthem (in a good way) plus with the Gulf War just starting it was pretty emotional for alot of people. She sealed her spot as a darling of america (man how things can change) with this moment.

but seriously its Marvin Gaye

Jermaine Taylor vs. B-Hop (not sure if it was 1st or 2nd fight), but R-Kelly just doesn't get it.

Cut to last Sunday, when Christina Aguilera lost her place in the anthem before the Super Bowl and repeated a line. The uproar over the botched lyrics focused on the effect instead of the cause. Perhaps if Ms. Aguilera wasn't so intent on turning a simple song into a soulful, bluesy two-minute opera, she wouldn't forget the words.

We call it the American Idol-ization of the national anthem, but it predates the TV show by decades. Jose Feliciano (1968 World Series) and Marvin Gaye (1983 NBA All-Star game) caught people's attention with moving, nontraditional interpretations. Not all reviews were kind. It says here their real transgression was inspiring a generation of feckless imitators.

These days anthem singers typically suffocate the song with wailing personal flourishes and dramatic pauses. And while the song has been debased by the likes of Roseanne Barr and Carl Lewis, it is Aguilera who best serves as the face of the genre.
