Lack of personalites in boxing
I know guys like Marlb can careless.
But personality sells. It get's people into fighters, makes fights more appealing.
I think more of a lack of personality in boxing then talent. Best guys most people never heard about, and got no personality.
Look at Bradley and Alexander. Good fighters. But can't get anymore boring then them. Ecept Andre Ward. Another good fighter that will never be a star because boring. His nickname "Son of God" says it all.
Froch got tons of personality. Whether you hate him or not. Can't say he's isn't entertaining in and out of the ring.
Look at top Light HWs. Good fighters. But they are all bland. Dawson, Cloud, Pascal.
Not even going to get into HW division.

Pascal is a character but English isn't his first language.
The Klitschko Brothers are as about as bland as they come.
Cotto has virtually no personality but still manages to be a big draw.

Cotto only a draw because of his style and because he's a Rican, which automaticaly gives him a fanbase.
But Cotto has never been a huge PPV star because of his lack of personality. Not because of his losses. Look at Oscar. He lost all his big fights. But because he was a pretty boy and had charisma, didn't matter.

Re: Lack of personalites in boxing
I agree, Grant. I think some fighters are scared to be themselves for fear of appearing ignorant. I say that because of Leon Spinks. He had no personality what so ever when he appeared on television. However, when he did the interview for that last Ali documentary (I forgot the name of it), he was hilarious.
Unfortunately, the fears of these fighters are all too real. If I managed a fighter, I'd get him speech therapy to increase his marketability.

Re: Lack of personalites in boxing
See, one of many reasons why I love boxing is, boxers can be real. They are not slaves to corporate sponsors or a league who make up a fake goody-goody image for them.
Hopkins makes a total ass out of himself everytime he talks, but you know what, that's Hopkins.
I'll take that then frauds like Lebron, who is a total dick, but Nike and ESPN cover it to make it look like he's not that bad of a guy so can sell more shoes or whatever. You know.
I agree. These guys need to get a fucking PR agent and a personality.

Re: Lack of personalites in boxing
i dont think a personality makes a star but it sure helps.lol camacho in his heyday was loaded with it in a boyish manner..ali displaced several sides of his personality.some i hated some i liked especialy the intelligent charming one.
rocky graziano tony galento ozzed with it..0likeablke characters..max baer even in the ring was loveable..manny pac comes across as a likeable nice guy with a glow in his reserve personality...
yep to have that trait sure helps providing it is real like the above examples..
the K brothers are bland and appear humorless..haye ands floyd too obnoxious..thoses are undesireable personalites...martinez seems to have some possibiltes....i for one would like to see more of them...interesting idea.

Froch to me has the kind of personality I like in a fighter. Cocky as fuck, willing to back it up. And funny. Add on a filthy mouthed yet insanly hot girlfriend.
Same with Hatton, Max Baer, Billy Conn, and yes, aspects of Ali, ect. All cocky, funny, guys.

Froch has really grown on me over the last few years. I'd watched enough of his fights over the years, but the way he really backed up the cockyness against top competition has impressed me. He has a tough obstacle in Glen Johnson (and then if he wins in the boring but damn good, Ward), but I wouldn't put it past him to pull off 2 more wins in the super 6. No matter what his results are, he will be worth watching on 360 and inside the ring. His girl, she is worth watching no matter what, as well.

Re: Lack of personalites in boxing
i totally agree. i have always thought that mayweather was funny but he is just getting into way too much trouble with his attitude now that its backfiring on him. i would actually probably like haye if he backed up his talk with fighting. toney was always funny and i loved watching him interview. then all of the classic personalities of old fighters.
boxing needs more personalities to get back on top otherwise the casual sport fan will never know them.

Re: Lack of personalites in boxing
Hopkins is a strange one, he's massive character outside the ring but inside it he can cure insomnia.
Although the Pascal fight got Showtime's highest ratings in years.

Outside the terrible Jones Jr fight, Hopkins fights haven't been that boring. Pavlik beatdown was exciting. And his fight with Pascal was as well, because he uncharacteristically was the agressor in that fight.
I think Hops no longer has the legs, and so has no choice but to stand and fight most of the time.

Re: Lack of personalites in boxing
Sometimes Hopkins fights can be fun to watch, sure they be really one sided but it's a joy to watch a master technician at work. eg Pavlik, Tito, Taylor.
And then other times his fights can be more excruciating than a root canal. eg Winky, Roy, Calzaghe

Yup. There realy is no personality with the younger fighters today. I dunno what deal is. Bad promotion? I dunno.
There are talented fighters, but boring as fuck, and so nobody cares or will watch them.
Nothing about Andre Ward that get's me excited when he fights.

James DeGale is a character, once he reaches your shores he'll gain alot of haters for his cockiness.

Re: Lack of personalites in boxing
Too many of today's fighters try to display too much of what they think passes for personality IMO. They become obnoxious punks because they confuse obnoxiousness with charisma. They think their 'charisma' will make them stars rather than earning it in the ring (see a certain UK hype job)
I think the problem is too few of the fighters are likable.
Be humble, let your performances do the talking, and the money will come.

Re: Lack of personalites in boxing
Boxing is entertainment and personalities sell tickets, no doubt. The problem is guys who don't actually have an interesting personality trying to do a bad impression of WWE guys and running their mouths with lame trash talk.
A Mayorga, Toney or Jones who would talk smack with real talent made their fights much more interesting. Not everyone can or should do that though. Guys need to know who they are and be true to that.
It's just unfortunate that there aren't more genuinely interesting figthers out there now. To be fair there are some - Haye, Froch and Mayweather come to mind. Hate 'em or love 'em; they aren't boring.
