HBO to go head to head with Top Rank PPV on March 12th
@danrafaelespn Arum tells me Cotto fights March 12, probably in Vegas. Potential opponents he said are Martirosyan, Wolak or Mayorga. Says it will be PPV
@danrafaelespn Arum not happy that HBO is planning to go against his PPV on March 12 with a live HBO fight.
@danrafaelespn Arum: 'If they (HBO) want to do a show against our pay-per-view, that is a major development between HBO & ourselves

Good for HBO. About time they grew some balls and did this.

If Arum made Vanes vs Cotto they'd probably buy it for another date, but of course Arum who's bulldozing the sport right now wants Cotto vs Wolak on a bogus PPV

HBO needs keep doing this. Tell Arum and these promoters take the money that is offered, if they want more and threaten to put on nich PPV, tell them fine, you'll counter-program on the same night

I agree. Free is free. People will always take the free option especially when we're not talking superfights. These are average run of the mill fights.

That's the only way you're going to discourage these bogus PPV cards that have no business on PPV and hurt the sport.

Yup, the only people that they make richer are the promoters and in the short term the fighters. Fighters miss out on coveted exposure fighting on niche PPV's.

Or NBC, ABC, CBS on Saturday afternoon. Or even Saturday at 10pm. Perfect lead in to SNL for NBC. Notre Dame football or Dew Tour, Nightly News boxing from 10-11p then local news then SNL?

+1
ESPN needs to open up their pocket books a bit and get even FNF level fights back on Saturday afternoons
Anyone notice what they have been airing lately w/out College Football? ESPN Sports Saturday on ABC -- reruns of highlights, sports nation, or 30 for 30 films
They could easily do it

Naw guys, weekend is dead zone for anything. Unless it's football or major NBA game. Or big marquee boxing match up.
ESPN needs to bring back Wendsday Night Fights, but put top fights on that night, not Friday Night. And have it on regular ESPN.
Same goes for HBO. I've been along with others been saying need to move HBO BAD and hell even some Championship boxing to Monday or Tuesday nights. Nights when people are actualy home.

I dont buy that
You realize how many people grew up and know Saturday fights on ABC Wide World of Sports????
That's a generation you could bring back to the sport by having quality fights on at that same time
Dan Porko Rafael even tweeted before that streams for the Vitali and Wlad fights got higher/equal ratings than the college football games

Monday night football just went down the shitter. There are no sports on Networks during the week. Cuts into primetime. 9pm start time on the east coast proved to be too late. It's why you see 830 sunday night football having success. Saturday or Sunday afternoon when there is no golf is the best bet.

In Germany, not the US.
Boxing was a major sport back in that time. It isn't anymore. Non hardcore boxing fans today are not going to cancel their plans or schedule around them so they can watch a couple non big name fighters on a Saturday fight.
But they will watch if it's during middle of the week and little is on sporting wise.
Boxing got to re-build it's audience. And having it on during the weekday is the best way to do that.

They wont and didn't watch. Again its why we don't see the wednesday night fights anymore. Saturday afternoon would be perfect. Have a triple header starting at Three. Coin it three at three.

That's the NFL, you know, king of sport's in the US. You can't compare boxing today to the major sport's because boxing become a nich sport.
It has to re-build it's audience, especialy with the younger people.
Sunday Night Football get's good ratings because it's the end of the weekend, and people are home, because got work the next day. Plus they've had better mach-ups then Monday Night.
Hell, if can get a boxing fight on Sunday night, that'd be cool. I remember Tyson use to have fights on during middle of the week.

Wed Night Fights had zero budget, and had the worse fights put on compared to FNF. It was a dumping ground during the summer period.
Why I said, put better match-ups Wed Night, and put them on regular ESPN when nothing going on sporting wise.

gomez, do I realy have to show you ratings for Friday and Saturday night compared to during the week?
Or how when a show is moved to Friday or Saturday, it's basicaly the death gallows for it.

I wasnt comparing the sports, pointing out that even the #1 sport in the country people rather view at home
Again, its easier to bring back an old fan than it is to create a new one
Can do both by showcasing fights on ABC Wide World of Sports on a Saturday

And NFL failed on Monday night. Build up would be afternoon weekends between seasons or during dull parts of seasons. You might get your boxing wish in the form of MMA during the weeknights. Rumor is the rights are free and the networks are less inclined to go with hour long dramas. The only thing holding it up is the violence. Heard this from an exec at the xmas party at work. They know im into boxing and thought telling me about MMA would cheer me up. A television show has it's rights sold to a network. Boxing rights are very expensive.
