I agree with Marble....there's plenty of time for Mosley & Berto to fight it out for the Pac sweepstakes. Berto didn't even break a sweat in his last fight. Add to that the fact that he pulled out of his fight with Shane and there's plenty of argument to support them fighting each other first.

As to what he's done; sadly, it's what he hasn't done that matters. He hasn't showed himself as an aging, declining fighter. He doesn't deserve Pacquiao, but he's the best candidate. Boxing is about giving guy's that shot and seeing what they do with it. Berto's the guy who I think can potentially make something of a shot. Whether it's a W or an exciting fight, I like him much more than Mosley or JMM.
Boxing is NOT about "giving guys a shot." It is, or should be, about guys EARNING a shot.

if promoters where smart they would just put the bs aside and make
Pac vs JMM III
Mosley vs Berto
And two so so under card fights like
Guerrero vs Antillon
Ponce De Leon vs Caballero II
All on one big Cinco De Mayo PPV

Take out the Guerrero fight and add Angulo. That card'll never happen but it would be unreal.

Marlb it is a total waste of time for Berto to ask to fight Mosley in Feb. Mosley won't do it. He's old wanting a paycheck.
He sat on his Margarito win for over a year waiting for his payday fight. He isn't going to risk a Pac money fight by fighting Berto.
That's just sad reality.

Re: Berto: Do you want to see Pac fight Mosley's old Ass?
Berto himself had a chance to step up in comp but took step aside money to not fight Mosley.
His words have some validity but they sound funny coming from someone whose biggest win is close decision against Collazo. He could have fought Cotto, Mosley, or Clottey during the time frame since then but Collazo remains the best he's fought.
I just find it funny how he's bagging on Pac for fighting someone he took money to not fight. It's like when Flod huggers get on Pac for fighting Cotto and Margarito when it should have been Flod fighting them 2 years ago, but instead he went on a one and a half year "vacation."

No one's cutting him any slack for Haiti. An athlete shouldn't expected to compete in the wake of a tragedy. He had family members dead and missing. He deserves the benefit of the doubt.

That's the thing. NO ONE has earned a shot. Maybe JMM...but that fight would not play out well at 147. Berto is by default the next best guy.
It's the situation where your starting qb (Floyd) went down before the playoffs. You have 3 choices for back ups: 1) a great qb whose past his prime and looked terrible as the back up leading into the playoffs 2) a great college qb who blew his only start but has been doing well in the CFL 3) an untested rookie who was great in college, has big flaws, but has all of the physical tools needed to give you a shot. He's had some game live reps and had flashes of brilliance despite being a huge project.
The opponent is the best team in the league so you're going to have to put up points to have a chance to win.
From a fan perspective, I want to see #3. I don't think #1 and #2 have a shot and they're on their way out of the league anyways. Let's see what the kid can do.

i like the QB analogy..yep JMM earned no shot..1 fight at welter and he lost big.never beat a 140 pounder at all and beat 2 lightweights..fought at 126 6 years ago against pac and a 129 lb drained pac who floored him 3 times a few years ago..none soo called earned that shot..surely not a 40 year old who in 2 years fought 2 fights that stunk out the joint..the rookie at least holds 2 wins over credible welterweights and ranked ones a few wins over good up n coming welters and beat a establish ranked 140 pounder..the one qualified guy who beat easly 2 of the 3 names that are mentioned as pacs next fight is 1.on vacation2.dont realy want the fight3.has imense legal problems.....outside floyd there isnt any welter who soo called earned a shot at pac or his strap..the rookie QB has done the most ...berto..good post gumby.

That would get Berto miles of respect. I personally think Mosley, even a shot Mosley, can give Berto fits. I'd love to see the fight.marbleheadmaui wrote:Wait a minute. Is this the same Berto who bailed on a fight with Shane? I don't care how good the reason was. He has zero standing here. None.
Here's the way a reasonable person makes the point. "Hey Shane, Manny wants to fight in May, six months from now. I'll fight you in February and the winner gets Manny."
That's eight weeks to prepare, plenty of time, then ten weeks till the winner fights Manny, plenty of time to recover, plan, train and market.
Berto is trying to get a big fight without earning it.
