Gonzalez-Rosas: Full Report

Ex-WBA 105-pound titlist, unbeaten KO artist Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (27-0, 23 KOs), 107.75, Nicaragua, impressively acquired the WBA interim 108-pound belt as he dropped grudge rival Francisco “Chiquita” Rosas (21-8-2, 12 KOs), 108, Mexico, three times and scored a very quick demolition at 1:38 of the second round in a scheduled twelve-round elimination bout on Sunday in Tokyo, Japan.

Chocolatito simply looked awesome enough to stun the Japanese crowd, some of whom still remembered the Nicaraguan’s coronation at the expense of Japanese defending titlist Yutaka Niida in 2008. Gonzalez said, “I wasn’t in good shape when I fought Rosas in his home-turf Mexico in February of the previous year.” Now that both moved up to the 108-pound category (Rosas had been originally a 108-pound light-flyweight boxer), it seemed to be a more competitive fight.

But the 23-year-young Nicaraguan beautifully caught the game and durable Mexican with solid, accurate and effective uppercuts, with which he sent Rosas sprawling to the deck on three occasions to terminate the affair due to the three-knockdown rule.

Gonzalez, a previous pupil of the late great Alexis Arguello, reminds us of the Explosive Thin Man’s devastating punching ability even tough he is a little 108-pounder. He will be able to invade and conquer the 112-pound category in the future, as he is such a talented hard-puncher. Now that he has moved up to the light-fly division, he may not be so fluctuating as previously.

There may be no need to describe the names of the officials in such a short affair, but this reporter bothers to write them for the sake of record-keepers: referee Takeshi Shimakawa (Japan); judges Derek Milham (Australia), Robert Hoyle (US) and Silvestre Abainza (Philippines), all of whom, of course, gave the first round to Chocolatito. The WBA supervisor was Renzo Bagnariol (Nicaragua).
