huge overreaction to the 12th round knockdown Empty huge overreaction to the 12th round knockdown

i want to first say that im not talking about an overreaction in the middle of all the excitement. that is expected because i believe martinez was truly hurt and i really thought that there was a strong possibility of a stoppage.

this is what im talking about though. martinez totally outboxed chavez through 11 rounds. he decided in the 12th round to go for the KO, unlike pretty much any other fighter. most fighters who have that big of lead coast the last round, especially when you are considered the boxer and your opponent the puncher. if he wanted to, he could have stayed away and just swept the scorecards. so more than anything, i give a ton of respect to martinez for actually going for the KO when he didnt need to and it was a very dangerous thing to do.

that knockdown didnt really show me anything out of chavez that i didnt already know. i knew that he was tough and had a good chin. i knew that he was much bigger than martinez so he obviously was the stronger and harder hitting fighter. i knew that if he could land a big punch, he could hurt martinez. that 12th round wasnt really much of what chavez did, but what martinez allowed him to do. most other fighters in chavez' position would do the exact same thing. if they were down on the scorecards and their opponent decided to trade, they would trade with them. again, martinez could have easily just boxed the last round and won it.

that knockdown does not merit a rematch. martinez wouldnt make that mistake twice. he would do the same thing again in the next fight but wouldnt trade at the end when he had the fight in the bag like that. chavez did get destroyed like i and other posters predicted. the 12th round just gave the fight a little bit of excitement but doesnt at all take away from the fact that martinez easily won and is the better fighter by far.

I totally agree with you. But Martinez's mistake will earn him a lot more money in a rematch down the road. What caused the KD was Martinez went straight back instead of keeping his head down when turning to the side to keep distance from jr and by exposing his head, he got clobbered and hurt him which lead to him going down with JRs flurry. It was something similar to what Canelo did with Jose Cotto. They both made a little technical mistake that caused a KD that people blow out of porportion. It doesn't merrit a rematch, but the money will be there for it. Jerry Jones already told Arum to make the rematch in his Cowboys stadium. Yeah Chavez can hurt Martinez if given the oppertunity, but Martinez can survive and out class him for most of the fight. Chavez isn't on his level as a fighter, but he did prove he belongs in there with him.

An Martinez showed a lot of heart and balls because after he went down he didn't tie up, he was still swinging with Chavez.

There won't be a rematch.

Good timing by Max Kellerman when he said, "Can Chavez do something in this final round to salvage what happened in the first 11 rounds."

At the end of the fight, Chavez Jr.'s stock still went up. He hung in there, fought his hardest, and generated a late fight twist. At the end of the fight the crowd cheered for him and respected his efforts.

Arum will not risk putting that on the line again. Chavez will most likely move up in weight. Will he fight Andre Ward? No. Arum will want to give him some tune-up fights (which is fair to be honest). He is coming off of a defeat.

I think the only reason he went to the ropes was to rest. Even if Chavez Jr. was landing punches, it gave him a little breather.

The advice that Chavez Sr gave him seemed to make a big difference. He told him to throw his punches & not worry whether or not his feet were set. He said, throw punches even if your feet are moving.

roach was thinking about stopping the fight after the 9th and 10th. If he had stopped the fight, then the story today would have been only about how martinez beat up chavez jr, with pictures of chavez's face.

Martinez got lackidasical for 1 second, chavez landed a good shot, and a decent amount of the discussion is going to be that martinez outclassed him but almost got knocked out.

Well I believe the rematch, if there is one, should be put off till late next year or early 2014. Chavez should fight to get those trinkets from Geale next who I think Chavez is capable of beating. All to make him more marketable to his daddy's fans. He should fight Canelo before he out grows him. Then fight Martinez. There's a lot more money in a Canelo fight then a rematch with Martinez which is also a lot more dangerous. It's very possible Martinez can KO him in rematch like he did to PW. Canelo is much more beatable.

martinez only has another fight or two left in him before he should walk away.

i'd like to see martinez vs canelo. doubt GB makes it. martinez vs cotto-doubt that ever happens. martinez vs floyd. Floyd isn't crazy.

I think we end up with the rematch next if Martinez isn't going to be on the shelf for too long.

Thats exactly what I thought when I was watching the fight. In the 11th round jr starting to throw without being set. If he can learn to do that then a rematch will be much better.

The rematch isn't required but I am alright with it. I think the rematch could go several different ways. The most likely way is Sergio is more respectful and doesn't feel a KO is required which allows him to box to a 10-2 or 11-1 decision. However, I can see age and these injuries catching up with Sergio as well as Jr now believing that putting in the early work can yield a late stoppage. Jr got him to the ropes enough times but didn't do the work necessary when there. That was mostly because Sergio was making him pay an entry fee each time but I think part of it was Jr felt like it wasn't doing any good. Like I said in the other thread, Jr's beating and Sergio's age make me leery of making a prediction for either right now. I could see Sergio resting until the rematch on Cinco de Mayo weekend with Jr having an interim fight.

i dont see a rematch unless its immediate because for one, chavez is going to move up in weight soon. if he keeps doing this to his body (cutting so much weight), it will be very detrimental in the future. also, sergio is getting old so he doesnt have very long to go at all until he is on the top still.

So.....why isn't anybody screaming for a rematch between Martinez & Macklin, or Barker or Dzinziruk? The ONLY reason rematch is being mentioned is that late knockdown. Martinez could have danced & avoided that, easily. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid. If the guy's last name wasn't Chavez, this conversation doesn't happen.
