@danrafaelespn Purses for the fighters on Saturday's HBO card: Marquez $1.4 mill, Katsidis $530K, Berto $910K, Hernandez $75K, Caballero $200K, Litzau $50K

$910k for an undercard fight against a nobody, it's disgraceful that he's getting more than Katsidis.

I don't get it. I just don't.

If he was a draw, I could undserstand it. But he isn't. He couldn't even get anyone show up in his hometown. His ratings are terrible.

I just don't fucking get it!

lets see if hbo now keeps its word on berto..they told him the gravy trains over.time to fight good competition...its disgusting he gets about 92 percent the other guy 8 percent of the money alotted that fight..a million dollars on a undercard fight thats not a ppv fight..how stupid is that.

Berto gets purses like that for fighting club fighters while Glen Johnson's last three purses have been 12k, 50k, and 150k - two of those three fights were against Cloud, and Green.

Now tell me boxing isn't a warped, broken business.

about as smart as electrocuting yourself on purpose. Simply put, if you decide to do so, something is very wrong with your thought process.

HBO is negotiating against itself. HBO should have a nice excel spreadsheet with all the Showtime televised matches and the purses. Then they'd know approximately what Showtime would pay for a Berto fight. Then you offer an amount and say take it or leave it. If Berto's camp refuses, let his ass sit. He doesn't make any money sitting. Let them try to put one of his fights on PPV and see how much it loses.

No way in hell that Showtime offers Berto more than $350,000 for a fight against a guy like Hernandez (and I'm probably being generous).

^ ^ ^ you are being generous. Showtime wouldn't pay 100 grand for that.

If they are going to make the Berto fight a million dollar purse between both fighters (with over 900k to Berto) then why not make a 4 or 5 card night on regular HBO. Get rid of a Berto fight and put on more fights in the 300k total range.

4-5 fight cards on regular HBO with a main event like Marquez Katsidis would bring fans back to the game. Really, how much time does HBO need on Saturday night to show the same movie that everyone has seen 5 times?

its pretty ridiculous. berto cant sell fights and has never really even stepped up in competition. how is he getting almost a million for this fight? even elite fighters should hardly be making that much money if they are fighting a nobody.

While I agree that Berto is being over-paid & pampered, I disagree that Katsidis deserves more. He lost to the only top tier fighters he faced and has no significant wins on his resume' to suggest he deserves big money. Berto has been brought along too slowly IMO. If he had fought Shane & won (which I doubt) maybe he could command some big paydays. Haymon must have made some deal with HBO & I bet those guys feel like fools now.

So now I pose this....if Berto handles Hernandez, does he get any respect? Does he still have to fight a "name" fighter before anyone takes him seriously? Who is out there at 147 realistically for Berto that will garner him this respect?

it is disgusting, why does Haymon have so much control over these idiots at HBO. Berto sucks, he really isn't good so i don't know how he does it. he couldn't sell a single ticket in any arena. his only claim to fame is being a black fighter that Manny is "avoiding"

Clottey, Mosley, Cintron, Randall Bailey, Abregu, even taking one another prospect like Mike Jones

See...this is what I'm talking about.
Clottey (stood like a statue vs. Pacquiao)
Mosley (old & past his prime)
Abregu (seriously? WTF?)
Mike Jones? (Who? this guy's 2 tiers below anyone with a trinket)
Randall Bailey (isn't he 65 now?)
My point is, none of these guys gets Berto any respect. We can go right down the list of "ranked" welterweights.....there's no names left. I wouldn't mind Berto/Cintron, that would be a good fight. Have you seen the rankings? The WBC looks like a who's who of Euro's...WBA doesn't even have a #1 ranked welter (and Matthew Hatton at #6???) Forget the IBF...even Ring Mag. has Berto #3 behind Manny & Floyd......he's destined to be the Rodney Dangerfield of Boxing.

thats the issue, fans look at fighters like none of them belong based on ONE performance

Its like always bringing up Manny's KO loss early in his career or the loss to Morales years ago

If Berto would knock off 2 or 3 of the names I mentioned, he'd be in a lot better standing than he is today
