Sad news from Mexico City as former three-time world title challenger Hector Lopez died of an apparent drug overdose on Monday, Southern California matchmaker Hervi Estrada told Fightnews.com on Tuesday. Lopez was in Mexico City at the time of his death, working with the Mexican Olympic boxing team. According to Estrada, Lopez struggled with drug abuse during a majority of his adult life.

Cocaine I guess? Sadly that seems to be the drug of choice for most ex-fighters.

lopez holds a special place in australian boxing hearts.he was kostya's first big test & though he lost a 10 round decision,kostya learnt more in that fight than in any fight until his loss to vince phillips.lopez showed his class etc,after that fight he respected kostya enough,to be a sparring partner for him.he fought on the under card of kostya's title defence at parramatta stadium,won a unamious decision fighting a guy with much longer reach.the way he schooled julio(think that was his name)using his defensive style got him the nickname"hector the chest protector"no way could his opponent break hector's defence & midway through jmulio was like a child flailing away.
