I'd say he is overrated by the casual boxing fan.
Underrated a bit by the hardcore and historian set.

Which kind of puts him right where he should be, a Hall of Famer that ranks below the historical names the sport and division has produced.

He's still an underachiever though. His ability trumped his accomplishments so a lot of people look at his career as disappointing. That means people overlook the fact that he accomplished a lot more than many of the fighters he's compared to and only look at what he should/could have done.
Mike and Roy get the worst historical treatment because of how hyped they were in their prime. The same thing will happen to Floyd if he loses and possibly Pacquiao.
I'll say this: on any given day, Mike Tyson was the best fighter who ever lived. On most days, he wasn't.

Well hes the only man to knock out Larry Holmes, he destroyed undefeated Michael Spinks in under two minutes, cleaned out the division and became undisputed champion. Not a bad career.

Holmes was old and coming off back to back losses and Spinks wasnt a real HW. The division was not good when Tyson came through. On top of that he lost to Buster Douglas 3 fights after he became the champ.kbyte wrote:Well hes the only man to knock out Larry Holmes, he destroyed undefeated Michael Spinks in under two minutes, cleaned out the division and became undisputed champion. How is the guy in the HOF? He beats Spinks and then 3 fights later is the Dougles fight. He never beat another great HW in their prime.

He wasn't a real heavyweight but he beat Larry Holmes. He was undefeated when Tyson fought him and he destroyed him in 91 seconds. How is that not a great win?

So would you consider Wladimir beating B-Hop a great victory? A HW Knocked out a LHW in the first round and thats a great victory?kbyte wrote:Soonermark890 wrote:Holmes was old and coming off back to back losses and Spinks wasnt a real HW. Hopkins isn't a true LHW though. He started way lower than that.

Difference is Spinks was able to handle HW. If RJJ had stayed at HW he would have beaten other top 10 guys also.

So Tyson is one of the greats based on a win over a LHW?freakzilla wrote:Soonermark890 wrote:OK then how about Cloud? Wlad vs Cloud. Come on guys look past all the hype and Tyson didnt do much in his career.freakzilla wrote:Hopkins isn't a true LHW though. He started way lower than that.

Re: Has Mike Tyson become the most underrated HW ever?
No, based on his skill set and wins. He would've beat Wlad for sure.

What wins? Razor? LOLfreakzilla wrote:No, based on his skill set and wins. He would've beat Wlad for sure.
There have been thousands of guys with a skill set to be great but they didnt get it done in the ring. Thats why he is highly overrated and doesnt deserve to be in the HOF.
Hell Allan Green has an amazing skill set but he isnt a HOF fighter.

I would rank the Spinks win above the recent Haye victory to put it in perspective. Probably on par with Foreman beating Moorer. Tyson was in a weak division and he crushed people. Then he lost his edge and completely spiraled out of control. That doesn't change the fact that he had a solid run as a dominant champion fighting the best his division had to offer. That's the same thing Holmes did before him and the Klits are doing now.
Let's not compare Allan Green to Tyson. Get serious. Tyson's skill set is he's among the fastest, quickest, hardest hitting heavyweights ever. He had unique physical tools. If you want to compare him to someone he's similar to a blown up version of Pacquiao. Just a complete physical specimen with good boxing skills on top of it.

His fights were like Donaire's recent fights have been. Given the amount of leverage he got on his punches, how thick he was and how fast he moved his hands, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the hardest puncher ever.
