Casablanca
Rosemary's Baby
Seven Samurai
Rashomon
Bullitt
The Bicycle Thief
The Graduate
The 400 Blows
Lolita
The Marrying Kind
12 Angry Men
The Apartment
2001 A Space Odyssey
The Hustler
The Wizard of Oz
Everything Disney
The 3 Faces of Eve
Pygmalion
Ben-Hur
Hitchcock - I would say pick a couple (Rear Window and Vertigo are my favorite so far)
The Longest Day
Con Air
The thing about old movies is the pacing is completely different though. A lot of "classics" bore people I know and I think movies got better from the 70s on.

Seven Samurai, The Magnificent 7 (someone else put this but it makes sense if you're doing Seven Samurai), and The Longest Day (it's basically an old version of a blockbuster epic, WWII). They all fit the war theme.
If you want to mix it up I'd go Rosemary's Baby (horror), Rear Window (mystery and amazing cinematography), and the Apartment (drama).
If I had to choose one to start it would be 7 Samurai. Either way, Nic Cage should probably be in your cue. Maybe Adaptation or Lord of War.
The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice & Men, A Street Car Named Desire, To Kill A Mocking Bird, Citizen Kane, and Whose Afraid of Virginia Woolf? are other movies that are usually considered classics but I had to watch them for school so I remember them as work. Except Of Mice & Men, gotta respect a man who wears gloves to keep his hands soft for the ladies.

Re: Classic movies everyone should see.
I just did pre 1970 to put a cap on it. I think classic can be anything. Here's a random 70s great movie list: http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/movie-pages/movie_70s.html. I've seen at least half of those and could easily argue that they're all classics. The list would've gotten too crowded.Ali wrote:Where is the cut off for a classic ?
