Khan vs Paul McCloskey? WHO??

Why would HBO even approve this?
EBU light welterweight title-holder Paul McCloskey (22-0, 12KOs) believes that he could be in line for a shot at WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan - if the champion fails to reach a deal with once-beaten contender Lamont Peterson.
"Amir mentioned me as a possible opponent on radio and I think I should be on his radar anyhow," revealed McCloskey, who has been communicating with Khan.
Indeed, Khan recently mentioned that there were issues with the Peterson negotiations and he might have to find another opponent if the two of them are unable to reach an agreement. McCloskey has an EBU defense set on March 5 against Michele Di Rocco in Belfast, Ireland. Any possible agreement with Khan would force his withdrawal from that fight. Khan is going to return on April 16 at the MEN Arena in Manchester.

Re: Khan vs Paul McCloskey? WHO??
Well, he's barely a Top Ten ranked fighter at Jr Welter. That's about all I can about it.
To be fair, not a lot out their in the division as far as Top Ten ranked opponents in the division. Bradley-Alexander are tied up. He's already fought Kotelnik and Maidana.
It'd be cool if he fought Ortiz or Peterson though.

I would too. Offering him 200k is basicaly GB saying, we don't want you to fight Khan, so we'll lowball you.

McCloskey isn't exactly a complete bum. he's in the Ring's top 10 ranking, he's undefeated but i agree it is a very strange match-up for them to be contemplating. it seems Golden Boy are more concerned about the logistics in fights then credibilty of opponent

i think it is, if the money was say $1 - 2 million then at least he gets something out of the fight when he loses and doesn't have to worry about future earnings from the sport, which will be majorly affected if he loses because blemishes on records means your stock and value is lowered nowadays. $200k sounds like a lot of money but people forget these guys don't have careers to fall back on after boxing. it's a short career and setting yourself up for life is a priority above glory. it's different to a guy working 40 years earning $60k annually because they always have that steady income. it's easy to say i'd fight anyone for $200k, it's all the hard work that has got Peterson there though that goes unaccounted for

I think you have to take a shot though. Every time you get a shot you should take it. You don't know if you'll get another one. And if you miss it you work your way back to another one. Especially if you fight hard and are a known fighter you'll keep getting chances. And if you win, you can dictate terms.
Look at the LHs. Dawson was the man and Pascal was an underdog. Then BHop was an underdog. Now Cloud is. Or Shumenov. Why would you run away from a chance to be the man? Or on that track. Isn't that what your fighting for?

Paul McKloskey is Irish and I believe he's the current European champion, he's borderline top ten.
I'd much rather see a Prescott rematch as well.
200K, HBO plus the chance to fight for a trinket, you'd have to be pretty foolish to turn down that, especially when you're coming off what should really be a loss.

Jonathan (Atlanta)
Dan, the press in the UK are talking about the Irishman Paul McCloskey as Khan's next opponent. Did Golden Boy say anything about him?

I spoke to Richard Schaefer about the whole Khan thing yesterday. He ran down a list of possible guys. That fight was not one of them.
