Las Vegas
This past weekend’s attendance was announced at 4,632. But that was buoyed by the fact that the Mandalay Bay offered free tickets to the fight AND a comped room. And this wasn’t an offer made just to their big players but folks, like a friend of mine, who hadn’t stayed there in a few years. And as he took up the offer, without provocation, his tickets were automatically upgraded from $150 to the $350 level.
Yet, still, you could’ve lobbed hand grenades into various sections of the Mandalay Bay Events Center and had no casualties. It’s time to start taking fights out of the stale, cocoon-of-the-casino venue and start doing some actual promoting in major league facilities. For boxing, this bubble has finally burst. It’s long been time to start cultivating local markets and replenish the boxing fan base. Ever been to a casino fight? Try finding families or younger folks who attend. See how many fans actually show up less than a half-hour before the televised bouts begin. And as Joan Guzman blew out Jason Davis early on this weekend, you had a hiatus that lasted about 50 minutes before Victor Ortiz and Lamont Peterson got into the ring. The atmosphere was as lively as a mausoleum. Unfortunately, this occurrence is not an aberration but the norm.

To be honest I don't even want Flod vs Karaoke Man in Vegas, I'd much rather see that fight take place in Arlington.

Been saying this forever. Promoters been living off of TV licence fees and casino money welfair for years. We're in a recession now, and Vegas is ground zero for it. Nobody wants to go to Vegas, a town built off of robbing people blind.
Promoters don't know how to promote fights anymore, nor have they cared about attendance for a long time. It's all about big TV licence fee money.

Bad economy + the Disneyfied Las Vegas = Poor Attendance.
Let the Mob run Vegas again and we'd see huge fights.

Vegas sucks for fights now. Being from West Coast, I can admit West Coast is the worse as far as dedicated sport's fans. Not going to get crowd's on the West Coast unless your a Mexican.

Promoters are just lazy
Look at Ward in Oakland, Alexander in St Louis, Adamek in Newark, Pascal/Bute in Canada, Cotto in NY, Mike Alvarado in Denver (before he went to jail), Viloria in Hawaii, etc
Local fighters in Local venues, aint that hard to figure out

A replacement opponent, zero press in the Bay Area, on a holiday weekend
Look at other fights with name opponents
About 10k for Miranda+Kessler and around 8k for Allan Green

Re: Las Vegas
Need more fights on the east coast and in places that don't usually see them (like Boston, as per the thread the other day). Make the tickets reasonable and you'll get the crowds out. Also east coast fights mean you can actually see a main event before midnight local time, which will help TV numbers and PPV buys.
Even though I don't get to as many fights as I'd like I'm spoiled living so close to Montreal right now. Need to see some smaller markets get big fights in the states.

Boxers were told under Franky Carbo goons that if didn't fight who they told them to fight, they'd get their legs broken.

Re: Las Vegas
Now is a great time to go to Vegas for a vacation - everything is cheap.
I drove there this past spring during a multi-state road trip. Stayed on the strip in a newly renovated room for $30/night, ate loads of good food for cheap prices, had no problem getting served comp drinks in the casino. If you tip someone a dollar or two, they are genuinely happy to get it because people aren't tipping.

Re: Las Vegas
The # 1 reason people go to Vegas is the gambling. The other things are just added in.
People not going to spend their money to vacation in some shit hole city in middle of the desert over say going to nice beaches or Hawaii ect.
With people being broke, gambling taken a hit, so Vegas is a ghost town. It's stupid to have fights there at this time.
