The better campaign won the election. It still leaves us with a very divided country. I hope that the Neo Cons/Rebublicans will be more open minded and the Democrats will be more bipartisan.

On a great note the Tea Party got fucking slaughtered!!!! Way to wake the fuck up America.

Prop 30 passed in California also. It raises tax on all people that make per 250k plus to fund education. Btw Obamas speech was strong last night.

thats ok here in oklahoma they decided to cut 35 million from the budget. We now don't tax contracts. Awesome we gave corporations a tax break because we all know they need it. Our people here are sheep. They believe anything

they better wake up.if they continue to allow the tea party extremist to scare the hell out of the speaker of the house and have a large say in policy and the direction of that party then they deserve to get trounched in the next election also.

we are almost always a divided country. I think a better term is we are polarized. I voted republican for president 3 times from 96 to 2012 and democratic 2 times. I believe in total house or senate races I have voted for 1 more democrats than republicans in the same time period.

I feel like I really am one of very few independent people.

for a political news junkie like me it was so much fun last night. Breaking down Virginia vote by counties all night with Kieran Mulvaney and a couple of number geek boxing fans on twitter was so much fun.

my observations:

1-the state polls. nate silver of 538.com pointed out prior to last night that state polls avgs in battleground states have predicted the winner in 30 of 33 races from 1988 to 2008 (that had leads for either party between 0.1-5.0%).

Republican pundits were forever citing ronald reagan's 1980 election and saying ignore the poll averages. Turned out they were wrong. I think they wanted to believe that Romney would win. I also think they neglect the numbers of the 1980 election. So much less polling. not that much time for Reagan's surge after the debate to get into the polling numbers, etc...

2- latino vote is growing. in another 8-12 years it will be 15% instead of 10%. republicans have to have to moderate their positions. More importantly the tone towards immigrants that can be a bit nativist has to go away.

3-karl rove was embarrasing last night. when he said they shouldn't call ohio he was being a jackass. I went to cnn's interactive map and it was obvious within 1 minute that there was democratic areas that obama was winning handily (and are areas he won handily in 08) that had reported 30% or so in their vote.

4-too many people get their news from msnbc or fox. I like both channels. both good entertainment. But there are very few people I trust on either channel to be evenhanded and not full of shit way too often.

5-Republicans and Democrats have a major difference- Democrats more easily admit defeat. When Bush beat Kerry in 2004, there was alot of pundits (columnists or on tv) that said that Bush had a mandate. I looked up and found a chris matthews quote the day after the 04 election saying that Bush had a mandate (and there is others).

Obama won less states and popular vote than 08, but he is going to end up around 330 electoral votes. Republicans all saying he didn't have any sort of mandate.

Bush won 285 or so electoral votes in 04 and Dems admitted that his policy views had won out and he had some political capital to get some things that he wanted done. Obama wins 30 to 50 more electoral votes and Repubs say he has done jack shit. Bullshit double standard.

6-Tea Party is killing republicans in state wide races. If you want to run a tea party candidate in a strongly republican house district then fine. Running the tea party style candidates in state wide elections is suicide.

7-There is still big economic issues in this country. Too many out of work or underemployed. long-term fiscal issues that have been pushed down the road. Obama's 1st term was not great. That being said, the US economic situation is better than most of europe, the situation he got when coming into office was pretty freaking bad, the economy seems to be picking up steam just a little bit, the US got bin laden during his first term, Iraq war was ended during his first term, Afghanistan is winding down, etc........

Republicans go beyond the pale. They ignore everything positive that he has done.
