Thurman was going to Knock him out. That was my upset pick of the month. Maidana saw what I saw.

Re: Maidana ducks Thurman ?
How is Thurman a viable opponent for Maidana? He's 5'11" and fights above welterweight/ Maidana is a 140 lber.

Re: Maidana ducks Thurman ?
this is a duck.maidana is not in shape.the excuse he wont fight the guy but will fight anyone including a klit is laughable..in the guys last 10 fights 7 of them were between 144-147 one a 150 2 others at 149...hes 2 inches taller then maidana thats all.hes not a huge big monster ..maybe 5 pounds heavier then maidana fight night.maybe.the whole 140 pound division is moving up.aleaxander bradley kahn now maidana.
look what there realy saying 3 weeks before the fight is we may have caught some films on the guy.he can punch he can box he can mover.he just signed with al haymon so he must have something.
my guy is slow easy to hit and the other guy is a sleeper..get us a stiff with a 15-2 record that cant punch cant move has been koed twice and decked in 4 other fights.
first maidanas claimed he will stay at 140..the extra weight hurt him against alexander..now hes moving up.uhuh..now the guy they agreed to fight is a monster.lol.dont they research anything..
what there realy saying at 140 147 my guys not ready to beat someone with talent that can fight..we need a tomatoe can opps a tuneup...
its a quack quack duck and i agree .this guy would of koed him.and not because hes huge.to big.

Definitely seems like they are wary of Thurman's size and power.

As they should be. He's basically a jr middleweight. Maidana has had only 1 fight at welter and that was against 140 pounder. So who knows if Maidana can even take punches from a full fledged welter let alone a jr middleweight.

Re: Maidana ducks Thurman ?
the guy isnt a jr middle no matter what maidana folks say.hes fought at 147 or less and a few fights at 149 or so .lets stop being dramtic calling him a full fledges jr middle.the kid has power.hes heavyhanded.he punches with good speed.can move can jab.good combo puncher.he needs to tighten up a little on defense.a fighter slow easy to hit that throws wide punches like maidana is taylor made for this kid.a out of shape madiana means a upset in the making.thats why they backed out of this fight.there not ready for this kid.inexperience a bit is his shortcomings.saying our guy is only a 140 pounder and hes a real jr middle is plain bullshit.
a so called world class fighter moving up in weight should be able to handle a good prospect.maidana folks dont think he can especialy since he looks like crap in training..

Re: Maidana ducks Thurman ?
It's official Maidana passed on the fight.
http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/1397/schedule-in-flux-as-maidana-balksJunior welterweight titlist Marcos Maidana (31-3, 28 KOs), coming off a virtual shutout decision loss to Devon Alexander in February, was slated to remain at the welterweight division and face untested Keith Thurman (17-0, 16 KOs) on the Adrien Broner-Vicente Escobedo undercard on July 21. Thurman was somehow approved for an HBO telecast despite zero credentials and a padded record that includes wins against 10 opponents with records of .500 or below. But Maidana saved us the trouble of the ridiculous fight by declining Golden Boy's offer.
Although HBO and Golden Boy talked as though the fight was made, Maidana's adviser, Sebastian Contursi, told ESPN.com that it was not finalized. Contursi said Golden Boy presented Maidana with three options for July: Alfonso Gomez, Shawn Porter and Thurman.
Contursi said they couldn't agree on money for the Gomez fight. He said that although they accepted Porter (for the July 14 Amir Khan-Danny Garcia undercard), Golden Boy told him Porter's side turned down the fight, leaving Maidana with the even more unknown Thurman.
"We accepted [Thurman] in principle, but we never even finalized negotiations," Contursi said. “In fact, we were supposed to fight July 14 in Las Vegas, and out of nothing, we were told it was gonna be on July 21 in Cincinnati. We wonder who might be that interested in seeing that fight take place when Thurman is an unknown fighter but naturally much bigger than Maidana [physically]. Maidana is under contract with [Golden Boy] and Thurman is not, so what is the point of making that fight in the first place?"
(That's easy: Thurman is with powerful adviser Al Haymon, who usually gets what he wants at HBO and Showtime.)
Contursi added: "Even though we admit that Maidana looked bad and lost his last fight, we don't think he should be facing an eight-round [fighter]. Can you think of any other case where a world champion that has earned his name has faced an eight-round fighter?"
So Maidana-Thurman, thankfully, is off. But Maidana's next move is up in the air, and Golden Boy and HBO are stuck trying to make a new fight for Thurman, who never should have been approved to be on the network in the first place.

Not a flat out duck but kinda shitty, how else is Thurman going to make a name for himself if guys like Maidana won't give him the opportunity ?

I don't think Maidana has fallen that far down the ladder just yet. Thurman needs to work his way up & also decide at which weight he wants to fight. The fact that he's had so many odd weights in his career prove he's not ready yet.Ali wrote:Not a flat out duck but kinda shitty, how else is Thurman going to make a name for himself if guys like Maidana won't give him the opportunity ?

Re: Maidana ducks Thurman ?
there are so many fighters that are top 10 in their divisions and hardly ever face another top 10 fighter.
Yet we have Maidana that faced Kotelnik, Ortiz, Khan, Alexander, and a not then ranked top 10 (and old) Morales, and we shit on this guy.
That list is better than 95% of the top 10 guys in all the divisions and we want to shit on him for wanting a relatively soft fight after looking like shit in his only fight at 147.
There are plenty of guys that deserve to be shit on because all they do is avoid any kind of tough fight, but this isn't one of them.

It's not like Maidana is a champion riding high.

True, but he's always one fight away from getting another title shot. He's a modern day Mustafa Hamsho. Thurman is no where near that.Ali wrote:flapanther2001 wrote:I don't think Maidana has fallen that far down the ladder just yet. Re: Maidana ducks Thurman ?
panther the puzzling question is.if thurman is no where ready because he fought at weights within a few pounds of each other per your words and is no where near a moderen hamsho then why didnt maidana take the fight and the payday.hes looking for a tune up and by your thoughts this guy fits the bill.
they backed out of the fight with the phoney excuse this guy is a full fledged jr middle.hes not.
yes the guy lacks experience to a certain degree and big fight type of guys.this fight was a step up for him.why dont they just be honest and say maidana isnt ready to fight a slick guy no matter how inexperienced because hes not in shape.hes only been with garcia a few weeks.they overestimated there abilty to get maidana ready for what they felt was a tune up.they realize this guy will give maidana a hard fight in the condition hes in..there looking for a dontay wilder type soft touch opponent.this guy isnt that.

No he's not, he's got no fanbase or lure for big fights. Maidana's had offers for decent fights in the past before and has turned them down for lame excuses, he's not the fearless warrior some of you make him out to be.
