Bob Arum is a joke, out of touch and needs to retire ASAP !!!

With his 79th birthday looming large and with 40 years on top of the boxing promotion totem pole, Bob Arum does not need to run any marketing tests or poll fight fans as to who might be the most commercial next opponent for his cash cow, Manny Pacquiao.

Arum knows, from past financial bonanzas and a few flops here and there, what sells.

And he adheres to one cardinal rule for PPV TV boxing success.

“I don't worry about who the bloggers think is the best opponent,” Arum said by telephone from Las vegas Sunday night. “I really don't care the writers say or even what the hardcore boxing followers say when it comes to this. I know we need to pick the opponent who is the most familiar to to the casual sports fan, the casual boxing fan who cannot name all the fighters.

“I did not watch the (Juan Manuel) Marquez fight as I was at a dinner party here in town. One guy there asked who was fighting on TV and somebody said, 'Juan Manuel...' So the guy says to me, 'How come you're not there at the fight, isn't he one of your fighters?' Obviously, this guy didn't know the difference between Marquez and my guy, Juan Manuel Lopez, the kid from Puerto Rico.

“It's not about Marquez's boxing ability, blah, blah, blah, it is all about the marketing of the fight.”

If you're reading between the lines here, then either Arum is already angling to knock down the Mexican counterpuncher's asking price for the trilogy bout against Megamanny or he is, indeed, more inclined to make the April or May bout with American Sugar Shane Mosley.

“The truth is, Marquez is not even a big seller in the Mexican market, certainly nothing like (Erik) Morales, (Marco Antonio) Barrera were or even anywhere near as popular as (Nov. 13 Pacman foe Antonio) Margarito. Frankly, Marquez does not compare to any of the three. I don't know it is because they were more extroverted in personality or more balls out type fighters of what.”

In what is likely to become a familiar theme, Arum bangs the drum loudly for Mosley, who turned up at Cowboys Stadium to lobby for a Pacman bout along with new adviser, the Houston-based rap music mogul James Prince.

“In the U.S., Marquez can't compare with Shane. Mosley is a crossover guy, well liked and accepted by Latinos, by white and in the African American markets. When it comes to pay per view, Marquez is only a 'B side” guy. When he fought (Juan) Diaz, that fight did absolutely no business.

“Don't forget, Mosley beat Oscar (de la Hoya) twice and had a fight with (Floyd) Mayweather. Mosley has just been on the big stage for a long, long time and people know who he is,” Arum.

What did Arum say about other Pacman foe candidates? I thought you'd never ask.

SERGIO MARTINEZ: “It was, it remains stupidity. Manny is not giving away 25 pounds to this guy. Manny weighed 144 ½ pounds the day before the Margarito fight. So let's say Manny goes into the ring and weighs about 147-148 pounds while Martinez comes in weighing 175. Manny can have those kind of fights, sure, but not if you want him to stay around a while. Margarito hurt Manny in their fight.”

ANDRE BERTO: “I envision myself being able to sell him as an opponent but, right now, nobody knows who he is.”

FLOYD MAYWEATHER: Todd (DuBoef) tried to reach out to Floyd by phone but contact could not be made. I think Floyd is having another flirtation with (Don) King which is good for me.”

Sadily, what Arum says is accurate. Us hardcore fans are the minority. A very small minority.

And can't always go by what hardcore fans want. Not even Dana White listens to hardcore fans. If he did, he'd never got Lesnar, who become UFC's biggest PPV draw. Never would have brought in Kimbo, who gave TUF solid ratings.

Actually Dana does listen to his twitter fans, he called off Mir vs Lesnar III after a negative reaction, also done the same with Hendo vs Franklin II

Shane Mosley was waxed by Mayweather and struggled with Sergio Freaking Mora, he shouldn't be getting a shot at Pacquiao.

I hope Golden Boy sue both their asses.

No it's actually a smart decision, another Mir fight would just be a one sided affair that wouldn't benefit the UFC or Lesnar. A Lesnar vs Nelson fight would be ten times more interesting.

But in this case it's not just a minority, it's a large group of fans and the media who want Pac vs Marquez III, nobody is asking for Mosley and the casual fans watched Mayweather beat him up earlier this year.

Bob's dinosaur tactics are harming the sport.

I don't want Marquez either. I'd rather see Pac vs Berto. But nobody knows who fuck Berto is because he's a no draw.

arum absolutely knows what hes doing..hes knocking down marquezs price and will make anyone realize shane mosley has already agreeded to the deal and the numbers..thats the yardstick he will use as well as the logic in negotiations..hes hinted berto is ok but a unknown..berto has had enough exposure to be somewhat known..its knocking down bertos unreasonable or potential unreasonable terms..mosley yes is better known to the casual fans but also thoses casual fans as well as hard core fans realize mosley is sliding downhill....mosley may get a fight with pac if marquez or berto want more of a percentage then arums willing to give..if not and berto says ok to the good pile of money arum will offer then that fight you will see in november..the big hint is arum says he can sell berto..i still look for the suprize choice of the bradley-alexander winner for may...arum has the ace in the hole with pacquio and is playing his cards right..hes a wise expert at negotiating..so unless floyd shocks everyone and says ill agree to the terms that were presented last in thoses non negotiating sessions hes left out to dry..folks may not like bob arum but hes a genuis with these moves..he knows what hes doing big time and hes far from a dinisor..

Agreed. Arum is sleazy ass, but he's one best promoters boxing had. Why? Look how him and Top Rank are still thriving while former competitors like King, Main Events, ect are gone or irrelevant.

His main rival now GB front by a guy he promoted. GB failed to even create their own fighters. All can do is steal other promoter's fighters.

i know i'm going off topic here but here's my take on Brock Lesnar. the guy is juiced up to the max, you don't naturally get that size or sustain it, i don't care who you are or where you come from. his injury was the result of steroid abuse, pretty obvious. when he came back and fought Cain Velazquez he looked an absolute shell of what he was before his illness. he looked weak and soft in comparison to before. UFC is as much about politics as boxing. lesnar is a b ig draw because he is a circus act. being significantly bigger than your opponents, sitting on top of them and clubbing them to death is not entertainment to me and carries no skill. The UFC's match-ups are as strategically set out as Boxing's are

Yup. Lesnar brought in and given un-deserved title shot because his popularity as a pro wrestler, and he'd bring in the pro wrestling fans. It's been proven that pro wrestling fans and MMA fans go hand and hand more than boxing fans and MMA fans. Same areas MMA is big in are big pro wrestling territories.

Arum is probably making more money than ever. He's out of touch....like a fox!!!

I don't like a lot of the moves Arum makes, but I understand why he makes them. His first priority is the good of his company.

I love it, and your use of it was superb.

I believe a fight with Marquez would be a bigger draw then one with Mosley, and much more entertaining. The PPV numbers for JMM-Mayweather Jr. were well over a million, and considering that Pacquiao and JMM, have that rivalry thing going on, I see a 3rd fight being a blockbuster.

Arum is no fool, when the public starts clamouring for Pac-JMM III and he sees the money that can be made off of this fight, it will happen, hopefully next.
