JMM no longer the Lightweight Champ
One of the most-painful duties for us is to vacate a championship. However, that’s the position we’re in now with Juan Manuel Marquez.
Marquez, the lightweight champ since he stopped Joel Casamayor in 2008, easily outpointed Sergei Fedchenko to win an interim junior welterweight title Saturday in Mexico City and all his prospective opponents are 140- to 147-pounders.
Also, he hasn’t fought at 135 pounds since he stopped Michael Katsidis in nine rounds in November 2010, almost a year and a half ago.
Thus, it’s time to vacate the lightweight title and recognize Marquez as a 140-pounder.

Re: JMM no longer the Lightweight Champ
the champ plus the number 1 and 2 top contenders disappear from rings rankings at lightweight.boxing weekly shots itself in the head but in this case ring magazine did the right thing.they justifide correctly there reasons which were sound.in fact they were more then fair with marquez who made no effort to defend the crown at lightweight .it will be interesting where rios will be ranked at 140 by the abc commisions after his unoffical loss at 140.yes 140.lets see bradley petterson garcia and now marquez are all so called champs at 140..i may be missing someone else.is burns a champ.id much rather have a vacancy for a title then 5 or 6 guys calling themselves champs.the sad part is thoses fighters actualy believe there a world champ because abc xyz says so.
ring doesnt need another vacancy but in this case they had no other choice.they did the right thing.

They've made the right decision because it's pretty obvious that Marquez is done with Lightweight.
What I don't get is why Juan didn't vacate the title, if you're not planning to return to the division why hold it hostage ?

Fighters don't give up their belts until they are forced too. In past expirance, The Ring will ask a fighter who hasn't defended the belt in a year if they plan on doing so, and if not, to vacate it. Most cases, they will. But Pac basically forced the Ring to strip him of his JR Welter belt he won from Hatton. Pac hadn't defended it in over a year and Ring asked him to vacate it, he refused. So when his next fight wasn't at Jr Welter, the Ring removed him as the Champ.
