Sillyman: Chavez is Obligated To Mexico To Fight Martinez
The middleweight champion of the World Boxing Council (WBC), Mexico's Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., is being pushed to defend his title against the mandatory challenger, Argentine's Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez - or in the alternative he must vacate the belt. A few months ago, WBC president Jose Sulaiman gave Chavez permission to make a voluntary defense against Peter Manfredo Jr. with the understanding that Martinez would fight the winner. Sulaiman's position is still the same.
"They continue to ask me about Martinez and Chavez. I answered this months ago and the answer is still the same. If [the fight] is not done, the title is vacant," said Sulaiman.
Chavez Jr., who won the WBC title in June, is unbeaten in 45 fights with 31 KOs and one draw. Martinez has a record of 48-2-2, with 27 KOs, and he holds the WBC's Diamond title at middleweight.

Sulaiman: Chavez Jr. is Like a Son, He Must Fight Martinez
World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman said it wasn't easy to order WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31KOs) to fight Diamond champion Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs). Sulaiman, while realizing the danger involved in facing Martinez, believes the time has come for Chavez Jr. to showcase his worth as a champion to the world. At the WBC's convention at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Chavez was ordered to fight Martinez next - unless their respective promoters can reach an alternate agreement.
“Julio César Chavez Jr. is like my godson. I a lot care for him, and also for Sergio who has always received my support and the care of the WBC. Nevertheless, this organization has rules and the Board of the WBC have taken a decision 0 Julio will have to face Sergio and show everybody why he’s the world champion," Sulaiman said.

Re: Sillyman: Chavez is Obligated To Mexico To Fight Martinez
I guess this matter got really heated at the WBC convention yesterday.
This one was good! Threats and accusations flew in every direction with this situation. Sergio Martinez was scheduled to meet his mandatory challenger and WBC interim champion Sebastian Zbik earlier this year. HBO’s Ross Greenberg was reported to have said, according to Martinez’ promoter Lou DiBella, “Zbik will never fight in HBO!” End of story, right? Wrong! Martinez was then somehow title-less, or elevated to “Champion Emeteritus,” it’s not exactly clear (unless you ask Martinez’ advisor Sampson Lewkowicz), and Zbik was elevated to regular WBC champion. When a match was made with Zbik defending against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., suddenly Zbik found himself fight on, you guessed it, HBO
Chavez’ promoter Top Rank was looking t make an optional defense in February on HBO, while that network was also holding a date in March for Martinez to defend his diamond belt. Both Martinez advisor Sampson Lewkowicz and promoter Lou DiBella lobbied vehemently for their case of Martinez to “challenge” Chavez as the mandatory. DiBella even went so far as to bring a cloth restaurant napkin on which details of a deal had been scrawled at some point, to Sulaiman up on the dais. Things got hot, tempers flared, and a near breakdown almost occurred. Eventually, the board voted unanimously in favor of Martinez to be the next opponent of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. regardless of the HBO dates being held, regardless of Chavez promoter Top Rank’s plans, and regardless of the outcomes of tomorrow’s Rubio-Vanda fight, where Rubio is currently the mandatory challenger of Chavez Jr.

Re: Sillyman: Chavez is Obligated To Mexico To Fight Martinez
interesting but this carnival makes pt barum look like a non hussler.chavez jr is a legit contender for martinezs title.ring magazine rankings establish that.the fight would be a big one financialy.chavez jr losing isnt going to destroy his following nor his appeal.a win would make him a much bigger star and that is in the area of a real possibilty dispite the low opinions of chavez jr.a hard fought loss even if stoped could bring legitimacy to chavezs critics.
striping a title is so comon place that most fans could care less.oh well its business as usual ..harmfull business perhaps.

I wonder how Chavez will feel about losing his belt like a coward? His daddy would have never allowed that to happen to him.

I agree. Sillyman and the joke WBC go out of there way to give him his trinket, and he will likely ditch it instead of facing Martinez.

Chavez Jr. vs Martinez Purse Bid Set By The WBC For 1/6
BoxingScene.com has been advised that the World Boxing Council have scheduled a mandatory purse bid for the middleweight fight between WBC champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31KOs) and the Diamond champion Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs). The WBC issued letters informing all of the required parties to appear at their headquarters in Mexico on January 6th. Last Thursday, the WBC ordered Chavez to defend his title against Martinez. Chavez is scheduled to return on February 4th, likely against Marco Antonio Rubio, while Martinez has a return date of March 17th. BoxingScene reported several days ago that Martinez's promoter, Lou DiBella, put in a formal request for an immediate purse bid date.

This is getting interesting, it seems Chavez really wants to keep his paper belt because he hasn't vacated it yet. He's in a lose, lose situation. He avoids Martinez, he loses his belt and looks cowardly, if he fights Martinez he will be embarrassed and Knocked, and still loses his belt.

Sulaiman: Chavez is Obligated To Mexico To Fight Martinez
WBC President Jose Suliaman believes that WBC middleweight champion Julio Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31KOs) has a moral obligation to Mexico to fight Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs) next. Both boxers are scheduled to fight in the coming months. The WBC made a recent ruling that orders the winner of Chavez's fight with Marco Antonio Rubio, scheduled for February 4th in Texas, to face Martinez next. Martinez has a scheduled fight against Matthew Macklin on March 17th. There has already been talk of Chavez [should he beat Rubio] fighting Puerto Rican star Miguel Cotto in July.
"Julio not only has a moral obligation but a commitment to Mexico. Because if he does not believe in himself, then Mexicans will not believe in him. He is approaching 50 fights and he's the champion of the world, but now he has to prove it," Sulaiman said.

I'm still skeptical that this fight will ever happen. Best way for Chavez to lose will be in an upset. Arum won't put him in a dangerous fight ever.

Chavez Jr. is in a fight that could be difficult against Rubio. Rubio has more power than Zbik, Manfredo, etc....

WBC: Chavez Jr-Sergio Martinez Talks Start Next Week
Middleweight king Sergio 'Maravilla' Martinez (48-2-2, 27KOs) is only one fight away from a potential clash with WBC 160-pound champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (45-0-1, 31KOs). This coming Saturday, Martinez faces Matthew Macklin at New York's Madison Square Garden.
If Martinez wins, WBC President Jose Sulaiman advised BoxingScene.com that the negotiations period for a mandatory fight between Chavez and Martinez - will begin on Monday, March 19th.
"On Monday, the negotiations period will begin. If they don't reach an agreement in a month, we'll proceed to a purse bid and the champion will receive 60% of the winning bid and the challenger will get 40%," Sulaiman said.
At December's WBC convention in Las Vegas, Chavez was ordered to fight Martinez. The WBC allowed Chavez to fight Marco Antonio Rubio in February - but he claims that his organization will refuse to sanction a possible June fight between Chavez and British boxer Martin Murray.
"It is not Chavez who does not want the fight, it is his promoter [Top Rank]. They will say that Martinez does not sell [tickets or pay-per-view], but there is no turning back, because a decision was made at [last year's] convention," Sulaiman said.

Top Rank will make Chavez jr vacate the belt and then Arum will bash Jose Sillyman. Top Rank will not allow the fight to happen and Chavez wills shut up and listen to what they tell him to do.
