UPDATED: Kirkland vs Molina January 28 on HBO

One week after his thrilling war against Alfredo Angulo where he withstood a first-round flooring to stop the Mexican in the sixth round, the reborn James Kirkland and his team are already looking at their next challenge at junior middleweight.
“They’re talking about [Sergio] Martinez at 160, and Lara, but I’d rather see [Kirkland] fight Carlos Molina,” said Cameron Dunkin, Kirkland’s manager.
Molina has suddenly become the most avoided fighter in the 154-pound division after a controversial draw with Erislandy Lara that many thought he won as well as pitching a virtual shutout against Kermit Cintron.
“The fight makes sense. Molina’s a good fighter. He beat Cintron, [and] should have beaten Lara. We’d like that fight next.”

if it happens I am very happy for MOlina. He should have won against Lara (bad draw). He beats Cintron. He didn't get a big fight(relatively speaking) following the Cintron win. For him to get a decent payday and a fight with Kirkland would be good.

BoxingScene.com has confirmed that junior middleweight contenders James Kirkland and Carlos Molina will meet in an HBO-televised broadcast on Jan. 28.
The news comes on the heels of a Nov. 13 report on this site that originally reported Team Kirkland’s interest in a Molina fight.
The explosive Kirkland (30-1, 27 KOs), from Austin, Tex., has re-established himself as a force in the 154-pound division since the southpaw reunited with trainer Ann Wolfe and subsequently stopped Alfredo “Perro” Angulo in a thrilling six-round war in November.
Meanwhile, the much-avoided Molina (19-4-2, 6 KOs) is coming off an impressive three-bout stretch in 2011 that includes a dominant ten-round unanimous decision over Kermit Cintron, a seventh-round TKO of Allen Conyers, and a controversial draw against Erislandy Lara that many thought he had won.
Talks are under way to determine a venue for the bout.

Molina is very craft and couldn't make tough fights with anyone, but I think Kirkland could look really good against him with his style, plus Molina isn't a hard puncher. This is a good match up for Kirkland.

i think that its a very dangerous fight for kirkland at this point. its a high risk low reward type of fight, but i guess all power to him. more fighters should take these kinds of fights. i still think that molina will pull it off.

Awesome! Maybe the best case scenario. Winner definitely gets a shot vs. Canelo or Cotto. Let's get any combination of Dzinziruk, Lara, Angulo, K9, Vanes, Trout going to keep the momentum.
