Joe Frazier Tribute Thread
I thought that we could have a thread to talk about the career of frazier. you can put up videos or talk about favorite fights of his or whatever.
frazier dominated the HW division during the days when ali was gone. his record doesnt look great at 32-4-1, but most of his fights were against solid competition. bonevena twice, machen, doug jones, chuvalo, mathis, quarry twice, ellis twice, bugner, stander, foster ali three times, foreman twice and other pretty solid fighters. he wrecked his opponents. there may be fighters now that have 40 or 50 wins with a good KO% but their competition is nowhere near fraziers and frazier had 27 KO's in those 32 wins.
joe frazier is exactly what a boxer should be. determined and always comes to fight. he was a true champion.

Re: Joe Frazier Tribute Thread
It's hard to have a fav Frazier fight, powerpuncher. He was brutal. Joe broke George Chuvalo's orbital bone (eye socket) and just about beat the very capable Jerry Quarry to death in their 2nd fight. I think you have to possess a certain love for boxing to enjoy seeing Joe Frazier get medieval on his opponents. Either you loved all his fights or just looked away out of sympathy for the other guy.
I liked looking at all of them. I saw it like this; Joe would fool around for a couple of rounds until his opponents got in a telling punch. Joe seemed to think, "Thanks for getting me emotionally involved in this fight", and then came the brutality. Nice guy to most folks he met. Pure maniac in the ring.
Though most will not associate Ali and Frazier in a positive way, they could've never been as great without each other. There would've been mysteries about both fighters had they never met each other.
Was Joe Frazier in Ali's shadow? Hell no. They were polar opposites as fighters. Either you were a Frazier fan or an Ali fan. The two sides were fanatical before each one of their fights and they still are. Sure, the fighters mellowed, but their fans never did. Anyone saying that Joe's career was overshadowed by Ali never really understood the rivalry (my opinion.). Larry Holmes was in Ali's shadow. Ray Leonard was the "Little Ali." Joe Frazier was Joe Frazier.
Joe seemed to know what an original creation he was. Before the first "Sugar Ray Leonard - Roberto Duran" fight in Montreal (Great, great fight by the way.), Joe was asked, "Does Duran remind you of anyone?" Joe replied, "Yeah. Charles Manson."
One of the reasons I hate this day is for the following reason; Every man has had a thought of living forever. Sure, we accept death but that little voice in our heads pops up once in a while and convinces us that we'll beat death. However, Frazier had the most incredible resolve of any man I've ever seen. On this day, everyone who knew Joe must accept their own mortality.

Dan Rafael
HBO pays tribute to Joe Frazier by replaying the 2009 documentary 'Thrilla in Manila.' Film airs Thursday, 6:30 pm ET/PT. It's outstanding.

I only guessing, but I think Magic and Bird liked each other. Ali and Frazier were more like the Hatfields and McCormicks (spelling).Gumby wrote:Great post. Re: Joe Frazier Tribute Thread
Thanks for the info on Bird and Magic. I never knew that. As far as Ali and Frazier were concerned, I always felt like Frazier harbored bitterness and faked forgivness for financial purposes. I could be wrong in that observation as well.powerpuncher wrote:they ended up becoming friends but bird used to hate magic.Frank wrote:I only guessing, but I think Magic and Bird liked each other. Re: Joe Frazier Tribute Thread
frank you more right then wrong.ali and frazier were not friends.mutual respect yes but joe had a bitterness as you stated for years.they tolerated each other i guess.a fellow i know for years went to the boxinghall of fame weekend and set up a display to sell at the memorbilla show.the last time i talked with him maybe 8 -9 years ago before he went up there he commented last year joe refushed to sign any items that ali had signed.
another story from joe himself was he and ali were going to be at an event now i dont remeber if it was before or after there first fight.i think it was before.joe gave ali a ride from philly to ny city and ali talked the whole time about different stuff.joe droped ali off about 4 blocks before the event saying i dont want folks to get the wrong idea and think we are friends.
i knew a amatuer heavyweight from philly who use to pal around with joe.he spared with everyone including joe but said he jumpted out of the ring when sparing with leotis martin one time..anyway he told me a story that he and joe were having a few drinks at a bar before the second foreman fight.frazier said i hate him meaning foreman.so joe did harber resentment.
on a lighter note the first time i saw frazier fight was in my home town utica ny at the national aau champiuonships in 1963.oddly enought south africa and PR fighters were there also.frazier lost a descion to tony doyle.there were 4 or 5 rednecks at ringside calling joe the N word etc etc that pissed me and my friend off so we went down there next to them cheering for joe.even thought doyle was from utah we said joe kicked that rednecks ass.go to that hicks body.pound that rebel etc etc hoping thoses guys wanted to start something.they didnt.after the fight was over joe looked at my friend and i in appreciation and nodded his head.

smoke is the reason i'm addicted to boxing.he was a heavy in weight only, most other aspects he was usually at a disadvantage.height, reach, talent even sight, yet he overcame these & was never beaten.even in defeat his indominatable spirit & desire was never broken.ironically his biggest defeat is what best described frazier for me.outgunned, outmanned & overwhelmed against big george,he did what i find it hard to believe any other human could do.knocked down 6 times in under 2 rounds,he still got to his feet 6 times & was still coming forward.if the ref didn't invoke the"mercy rule" i have no doubt he would of kept rising until foreman could throw no more.that to me is smokin' joe frazier.the eptiome of mind over matter.RIP smoke & thank you.

It's not like Joe would be a stationary target for either Klit's jabs, he'd bob and weave inside their reach and tag them with multiple hooks.
Basically Dan puts this all down to their height and the Foreman fight.

Re: Joe Frazier Tribute Thread
2 1/2 years ago Joe was a guest on Morning Joe on MSNBC whose studio is upstairs from where I work at NBC. In ten years in the television business he remains the only celebrity that I actively sought out to meet. I abandoned my post on the network and went up the west bank elevator to MSNBC and caught the champ as he was leaving the studio (All MSNBC Celebrities leave on the Sixth Avenue side). I walked up to him and extended my hand, he shook my hand and I told him "Thanks". He responded "For What?" I said "For giving my old man material for great stories". He laughed and said "Tell your pops thanks".
