Cunningham robbed
Hernandez dethrones Cunningham
Proska destroys Sylvester, Campillo-Murat draw
By Karl Freitag
IBF cruiserweight champion Steve Cunningham (24-3, 12 KOs) lost a controversial six round technical decision to interim champion Yoan Pablo Hernandez (25-1, 13 KOs) on Saturday night at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Germany. Hernandez dropped Cunningham with a short left hand in round one and Cunningham barely beat the count and barely survived the round. Cunningham seemed recovered by round two (trainer Nazeem Richardson bought Cunningham some extra time by spilling water in the corner). Hernandez surprisingly didn’t jump on Cunningham in round two, letting the champion further clear his head. Hernandez was cut on the left side of his head in round three and over his right eye in round six by head clashes and Cunningham schooled Hernandez from round three on. Referee Mickey Vann surprisingly waved it off after the sixth round due to the cuts, which didn’t seem particularly bad. Scores were 57-56 Cunningham, 58-55 and 59-54 for Hernandez. Cunningham was very upset by the sudden stoppage. Unbeaten middleweight Grzegorz Proksa (26-0, 19 KOs) battered and bloodied former IBF champion Sebastian Sylvester (34-5-1, 16 KOs) to win the vacant European middleweight title. The fight ended when Sylvester didn’t come out for round four.
After twelve hard rounds, a clash between former WBA light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (21-3-1, 8 KOs) and Karo Murat (24-1-1, 14 KOs) ended in a twelve round draw. In nothing less than a Pier Six brawl, Campillo and Murat left it all in the ring. Scores were announced as 115-113, 111-117, 114-114. Campillo, who previously lost a controversial majority decision to Murat, seemingly let this one slip away when Murat rocked him in the final minute of the fight.
Unbeaten heavyweight Edmund Gerber (17-0, 11 KOs) scored a seventh round KO of Yohan Banks (4-6-3, 2 KOs). Time was 2:10.
Unbeaten light heavyweight Dustin Dirks (22-0, 15 KOs) knocked out Parfait Tindani (7-7-3, 1 KO) at 2:37 of round eight.
Unbeaten super middleweight Henry Weber (15-0-1, 3 KOs) won an eight round split decision against former Arthur Abraham opponent Stjepan Bozic 24-6, 15 KOs).

I try to give Germany the benefit of the doubt but they make it so difficult.

But it doesn't mean that Cunningham wouldn't get a fair shake in other countries there like France, Italy, Spain, Greece etc.

Re: Cunningham robbed
Is it true Cunningham may have gotten a "long" count in the first round? I've heard 14 seconds, etc.

Re: Cunningham robbed
i watched the fight & though i could be accused of having bias(picked hernandez),i had the cuban ahead.i wouldn't of complained if cunningham got the decision, the rounds & fight was that close.but to call it a robbery, that is a stretch.definitely demands an immediate rematch, the decision to go to the cards was medical & that's never satisfactory.just because it was in germany is secondary.of course the"house"fighter might get benefit of the doubt in close rounds, but that isn't confined to germany, europe even usa(lara v williams for example)if they fight again next,i think hernandez will ko him but i'm usually wrong when i'm confident!

Damn Cunningham is getting hit/dropped way too frequently now, he's fading.
