I think a lot more was expected from all 3 in their careers. Which of the 3 was the most disappointing in your opinion?

Michael Grant easy.
Reid and Lacy maybe didn't make it too far, but not because they didn't try. Reid had that bum lamp, while Lacy just didn't have it at the end of the day. He tried hard against Calzaghe and got a beating that he psychologically never recovered from. Reid gave it his all too.
Grant didn't make it because he was soft. He couldn't impose himself to his fullest capability. He wasn't a quitter or a dog, but he had that gentle giant syndrome. With Reid and Lacy, I'm not sure they left a lot on the table. They got approximately the same amount of glory that their bodies and talents would allow.
You can't say that about Grant, who shoulda been able to win a few big fights with his gifts, but he didn't.

Poor Mark. What an amateur! Really.
But they thought he was gonna be Tommy Hearns just with a better chin, a standard he was never gonna meet.
Other than that, he had a few good moments. And seemed like an alright guy too. I saw him live once at the LV Hilton in the Starling draw. On the undercard, Chavez made a 135 defense against Panamanian southpaw Rodolfo Aguilar. Cool card.
We were in LV with an Italian Club group. A bunch of them saw me in the casino and said they were going. They were showing me the tickets. I thought they would hook me up. They didn't invite me. What dicks, I thought. I had a 20 on me and needed to russle up 40 more bucks to get into the fight. I was 14. I started playing video poker and hit 4-of-a-kind, took the money and walked to the Hilton from the Flamingo and saw the fight.
A few years later when I got my license, I saw one of guys from that group stranded on the street with a car problem. He eyed me and started waving frantically for me to stop and help. I thought "now you pay for that shit you lowdown mf." Who does that sht to a 14 yr old boxing fanatic? I never liked those guys since that.

We used to take the bus to DUMBO to catch a glimpse of Breland training at Gleason's, I was young and had to lie to my mom about where I was going. My cousins lived in Carrol Gardens so we'd ride the bus to their house from fucking Bensonhurst then ride to DUMBO and watch. It took all day. This was leading up to the Marlon Starling fight, we watched this guy in action and to watch him lose was heartbreaking. I was a little kid and this is probably what made me such a fan of the sport. Hearns was my favorite fighter but Breland was from around here and we thought that he would be the greatest. I even remember the adults were excited about him. What was sad was after he lost no one gave a fuck. His name is an after thought now.
You should see if those guys that you went on that trip with have any social media, then send them photos of yourself ring side when you're covering a fight. Fuck those guys. I don't do anything with Social Clubs. Travel groups of grown men freak me out, as an adult I don't need a travel buddy I can do it by myself.

Bee, that's cool stuff. That feeling about Breland was shared by a lot of people coast to coast. He was gonna be the next big thing and the Starling fight was a shock to the whole boxing world.
Funny thing about those guineas from the trip. As is always the case with ppl who do something profoundly unjust to me, they got theirs. In 1987, they were rolling. Come 2011, one guy is a coked-up mess, the other is on H, and the other one it turns out was a finocchio. Their son, who would wear this hideous $150 Mike Tyson vs. Bonecrusher Smith jacket to school, well he also ended up on the pipe and joining the Marines when he was like 34, just in time for Iraq.
But the image of them waving their tix in my face is a hard one to shake.
