Juan Manuel Marquez bulking up:
Marquez confirmed to a Web site reporter that he plans to bulk up for his fight against Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 12, although he said he’ll do it more intelligently than when he fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. He plans to gain weight under a doctor’s supervision. That’s bad news for those of us hoping for a competitive fight. Marquez, who will be 38 in August, is a natural 135 pounder. If he bulks up to around 142 – as he did for Mayweather – he’ll lose hand and foot speed. He would be wiser to fight at a comfortable weight (about 137, 138) to maintain speed, which is more important than strength. Henry Armstrong is an example of a fighter who regularly fought welterweights at around 135 with great success. Marquez isn’t Armstrong but he’s damned good.

Yea, like that worked well with Flod.

Pac has the power to hurt real welterweights now. 3-4 pounds of water weight ain't gonna make JMM's punches more effective or make his punch resistance better. Stay near 135 if he wants a 10% chance of winning. If he comes in at 140 he's done.

i agree. he just needs to treat this fight like any other. dont bulk up, just fight at your normal weight. that few pounds probably wont help a ton with his power but it will definitely affect his speed and ability.

Wait, wait, wait.

It depends on what kind of bulking we're talking about. Yeah, if it's just water weight or him eating a few extra cheesburgers, it's useless and counterproductive.

But if it's through strength training and maybe strengthing his legs and core, I don't see the problem.

That's Ariza did with Pac and Khan when they moved up.

It's piss weight.

I think this will just slow him down, make him even easier for Pac to hit him. This is going to get ugly.

Again, it all depends on what kind of weight he will be putting on. Leg and core strengthening won't slow him down

Did it slow Pac and Khan down?

Mistake JMM made with Mayweather was it was just dead, useless, weight. He looked bloated.

Khan already was a big lightweight it benefited him to move up. Pac has been around 140-145 since Morales

Just saying. All depends on what kind of weight we're talking about.

If it's through a good strength trainer, I don't see it being an issue. Because they will work on strengthing him up without giving up speed.

what's shocking is JMM didn't get pro help for weight gaining when he fought the best fighter in the world. now he's gonna fight the other best fighter. for all their ring smarts boxers can be pretty dumb sometimes

Lets hope your right Grant last thing Boxing needs is for Pac to go in there and dominate a fat slow version of JMM. Especially if the fight is on Showtime and will get play on CBS air time!

the problem is that at his age and at this point of his career its not going to work. these other fighters moved up more slowly. marquez is a lightweight trying to bulk up to a welter in one fight. that isnt good for anyone.

Marquez is at his limit at Lightweight, adding extra weight or muscle will only hamper him.

He doesnt need the extra weight, like Pacquiao he should focus on improving his conditioning

why is he trying to gain weight.
Last fight Pac 4 pounds more.

If Pac weighs in at 144 he'll get in the ring at 148 most likely.
Marquez's weight vs Katsidis-145 pounds.

Pac isn't much bigger now than when he last fought Marquez. He added 3-4 pounds of muscle. He didn't bulk way up. He just stopped dehydrating himself to make the weight for the weigh ins.

i agree and very true..thoses 4 or 5 pounds marquez wants to gain isnt going to make him superman nor punch much harder either.go in at your best fighting weight and the rest is nonsence.

Pac does not weigh much more than when he last fought Marquez. That doesn't mean he isn't much stronger. When you cut and have to rehydrate, you lose strength. The water weight you gain back is not the same as the functional muscle you would have in its place if you didn't have to cut.

If Marquez can add strength and retain his speed and quickness, there's no reason for him not to try and add weight. He should be trying everything he can to have a chance and not get hurt.

Marquez in prime condition is a 144-145 pound guy. That is it. He shouldn't try to match Pac by weighing 148 in the ring.
