Considering the source, take it with a major grain of salt.

Opponents being considered: Joey Gamache, Fernando Montiel, Paul McCloskey, Andriy Kotelnik, and Matthew Hatton.
Prediction: The opponent will not be up to par.

It probably has nothing to do with it, but I wonder if Mayweather is making this announcement because he will be dropped from the P4P and Welter rankings next week.

I'm not sure if the rankings are relevant to him. But his need to remain relevant is probably behind this. He has no heat surrounding him now. He probably feels he needs to schedule something to keep people talking about him.

Rankings aren't relivant to him, but P4P is. That's what he brags about the most.

2-3 years ago, the welterweight division was looking like a golden age.
Now it actually sucks somehow. Look at what Leonard did at that weight and compare that to Floyd.
I lay the fact that this welterweight era fizzled out at Floyd's feet. Now all the top guys are in other divisions or have been beaten to the point where they aren't threats anymore. And the only compelling fight remains Mayweather-Pac. And Floyd doesn't want it.
I'm not saying Floyd should be taking on all comers, but his resume is starting to look like a big ruse just to stay undefeated. What he is being offered is hard to pass up: Fight Pac and if you win, you're a legend. With a resume to back it up. It's a one-fight scenario and he won't do it.
Floyd is truly great. He should go down as such. But if he wants to provide crystal-clear, no-debate clarity to his resume, he needs that fight. That is his one road to crystal-clear greatness. Pacman actually has more options to achieve the same status. Floyd needs it more.
And he could win that fight is the crazy thing. Look what odds Leonard was facing going after Hagler. Mayweather would actually be a favorite! I grew up when guys would go to extreme lengths to prove their greatness and this guy can't even sign for a fight where he'd be favored?
Vaffanculo!

moved to 154 in last 3 years:
Cotto
Cintron
PW
Margacheato
got old/didn't fight alot:
Collazo
Quintana
Clottey
Mosley
Judah rightfully moved down
went from a great division to one that is lacking.
Floyd was the least willing of all the guys to face other top 10 guys. He did alot of sitting. PW, Cheato, Cotto, Cintron, Mosley, Clottey, all faced a decent amount of ranked guys. Floyd? Not so much.

Exactly Cappy. You know, in a time when the sport is struggling to gain mainstream U.S. appeal, that they'd be going out of their way to make these matches. Enough with the letting it percolate BS. Take the most compelling match on the table and make it. Let the sport regenerate like it always has and then make the next biggest fight. 5-6 times a year. Do that for a decade and see where the sport is.

he did this because Pac is getting ready to fight. Every time Pac is going to fight all of a sudden you start hearing more coming out of Floyd's mouth.

Re: Mayweather announces his return on Facebook
What happened is that the welterweight division sorted itself out. 06-07 there were a lot of questions and a lot of talent. Paul Williams, Margo, Judah, Cotto, Clottey, Mosley and Berto were all around and legitimate contenders to the ww crown.
Williams couldn't get a big fight and moved up. Margo lost to Williams got caught cheating and beaten by Mosley. Judah got beaten by Floyd, Cotto and Clottey. Cotto lost in brutal fashion to Margo. Clottey lost to Margo and Cotto. Mosley lost to Cotto. Berto didn't fight anyone of note (and until recently near the top of the division by default).
Then Pac and Floyd ran through all of those guys along with Hatton and De La Hoya. In doing so they showed a huge separation between them and the rest of the guys. The only question left was Pac vs. Floyd. Still is.

Did they have boxing judges in that fight? I thought it was 3 rounds to 2 for Aldo with a 10-8 for Hominick in the last round.
