IS MARTINEZ A SPECIAL FIGHTER
last night he totaly wiped out a guy who every boxing expert said1.he has a great jab one of boxings best2.hes a fighter that will make sergio look bad3.he has a solid excellent defense4.he has a excellent chin.5.hes truly a wortld class fighter.
segio put on a clinic that is rare.fast hands great combos excellent jab ring smarts fantastic movement etc etc..
hes come on the world stage not to long ago seaminly as a unknown talent..i suspect sergio threwout his career performed like this but was boxings best keeped secret.he in all likehood may of fought in argentina etc etc some fantastic fighters but because they were not guys that fought in the usa and had been not seen before we tend to think hes just arrived.
hes 36 and the pace he fights at is his strong point.the window of oportunity for sergio i feel is not that long.3-4 fights 18 months or so then father time will catch up with him.not because he has taken beatings but one night at maybe round 6 the pace stops.the second wind isnt there.it happens to everyone.
is this guy special.well in all the years watching the greats near greats and top fighters i have to say yes.hes magnificent.totaly focused intelligent great boxing skills and a excellent puncher.determination grit humilty ability yep hes special..this era right now yep pac is special so is floyd so is sergio.donaire could be but not yet.
i suspect hes been special for a long time and we fans are just discovering that.
what hes doing and how hes doing it ive seen only a few times.a pep a robinson and in a different way armstrong for example.yes a pac and floyd also but sergio last night took it to a level of magnificense that should be appreciated by all.
the window for this good man is closing.lets enjoy the ride while it lasts.this man is not only special but a great fighter.i dont care what anyone says.lets applaude him not dismiss him and what hes done.hes taking boxing fans on a fabulous ride..

Sergei is a damn good fighter. I think Ring when they do their top 100 had him in the 60s.
in rounds 6 and 7, Sergei D picked up the jab and hit martinez with more shots. He could have wilted but he was there to win. Martinez adjusted and destroyed him.
That is the impressive thing about Martinez. He adjusts and shows urgency during fights.
Against Pavlik, the tide was turning against him and he turned it up and cut Pavlik. That turned that fight.
Last night if he had come out in round 8 and fought the way he did late in 6 and 7, then Sergei D would have made it a tough fight for 12 full rounds. He didn't. He flattened the motherfucker.

Sort of. I think he's absolutely the class of a weak division. He's an elite fighter who never got that respect and is hitting his prime right now even though he's older.
However, Paul Williams was never a great middleweight. Pavlik was on a decline and never great to begin with (I personally think BHop had messed up Taylor by the time Kelly got to him). Dzinziruk showed that he could box with Martinez, but was outgunned physically (size, strength, power, and speed).
The thing that hurts Martinez to me is that the division above him is so strong. I think guys like Froch, Ward, Dirrell, Bute, Kessler, and Abe could give him a real hard time stylistically if they were at the same weight. That's not something I see when Pac

i think that martinez would do fine against the SMWs. he would definitely be smaller but he is quick enough to do well. if i were martinez, i would move up to because of the competition.Gumby wrote:Sort of. Re: IS MARTINEZ A SPECIAL FIGHTER
I think that Martinez truly understands what it means to be a champion though, which is rare nowadays. He seeks out challenges and constantly works to prove himself.
PW was dangerous going into the fight (but Martinez had worked on his body and technique while PW stood still). Pavlik was massive which is a huge match up problem. And Dzinziruk is a terribly difficult opponent. His shots just weren't hard enough to keep Sergio from controlling the pace. Sergio seems to try and fight the best available competition. It's just no one's close to him.
I still think the SMWs are too big and could deal with his speed. A lot of athletes in that group.

He'd have to cherry pick. Bute, Kessler, Froch, etc.., almost all the elite guys are 6 ft or taller. Some of them could fight at LH.
