Rock N Roll is Dead
Of course it's still around, and always will be. I mean, like boxing, it's officialy dead in the mainstream. I just read that the only "Rock" band in the Top 100 is Train. And Train SUCKS! They are as much rock as fucking Coldplay.
It's just auto-tune lip synchers, pop, gay dance music, and horrible hip-hop taking up the charts.
Sure, that stuff has it's place. But to have no real rock anymore in the mainstream is sad. Kids today don't even know who Metallica or Nirvana are.

I know this is off topic but when I read the your title I though "The Rock" was dead.

It's too bad it's not really part of the mainstream, but it will always be there to some extent. But it's a shame that people have become dumb to the point that any auto-tuned crap heavily pushed by MTV/radio gets popular.

There are little modern day bands that I like, probably Kasabian are the decent one around at the moment.

Record labels don't want to invest in new rock bands and take the time and money to build a fanbase for them.
A lot of big time bands' first couple of records didn't sell well. For example, Nirvana's first record "Bleach" didn't sell well at all until the band become huge with their second record and it was re-released.
Today, labels want instant money, so they go after fads and studio built artist. Like Avril Lavigne. She is completly artifically made. The record labels in the late '90s realized people were getting tired of the boy-bands, so they took a little girl that sung country songs in Canada and made her a "punk princess." The bitch didn't even know who The Romoans were.
That's all popular music is today. Image over substance. There's always been teen idols and shit, but never has it comepletly taken over mainstream music like it has now.

I remember reading an interview with Trent Reznor about 7 years ago (when he came back after disappearing for years) and he mentioned that when he first got signed the plan was to slowly build up a fanbase with the first two albums and then the third would be the big one. Imagine a record label having that conversation today?

I'm wondering if they are ever coming back, it seems like every album may be "the last", Maynard seems preoccupied with his vinyard (watch the movie "Judith", very cool docu about what he does), but I hope they go back on tour, I saw them play both NJ shows in '07 and consider them to be the best shows i've ever seen. They did a 30 minute jam session with Melt Banana at the A.C show which is probably my favorite concert moment ever (other than falling in the pit at the HS battle of the bands and the hot girl from our year falling on me )

Re: Rock N Roll is Dead
they are def. making another album. they had a show in january at the mohegan sun casino. thing is they are "perfectionists" and want the album to be flawless.Rumor was that the album was suppossed to be released this year but maynard has a lot of shit going on with his vinyard, a perfect circle, and maybe even puscifier if he still has that band.NJBeatdown86 wrote:Rum Capital wrote:Tool >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Any other band but they are taking FOREVER to make another album.

Re: Rock N Roll is Dead
They are perfectionists, they are all REALLY eccentric guys too. I barely go to shows any more, but Tool is a whole different experience than wading your way through wigger tough guys and mop-haired deathcore twinks at the Starland Ballroom.
One positive thing about rock, is that even if it does falter badly in the mainstream, the local scenes will always be alive, I'll never forget going to Middlesex County College shows when I was 13 and seeing bands like E-Town Concrete,Thursday, God Forbid, Converge (I think i'm actually on one of the Converge DVDs somewhere) and Shadows Fall long before they got big.

I was at a friend's birthday last weekend, and his daughter, who's 14, was making a playlist of what songs she wanted to play. And it was all this typical pop shit you'd expect from a 14 year old girl. But what's sad is, her guy friends were into that shit too. Had no idea who Metallica or Nirvana were.
