If Cotto had God himself and Jesus as his cutman he still wouldn't be able to beat Mayweather.

Re: If Cotto still had Steward ?
Steward did a couple of things.
Cotto's elbows aren't bowed out as much in a defensive position. The way he held them 3-4 yrs ago invited an uppercut up the middle. He also stopped doing those weird deep knee bends. Those are a couple of things that Steward noted in fights prior to working with him and seemed a little bit better.
The work Steward did with him and his current trainer have done isn't going to make a difference.
Cotto doesn't have an iron chin. If he did he could probably decide that he will go through fire, stalk Mayweather all night, and try to get him late. Cotto can't really do that.
Cotto doesn't have the handspeed or footspeed if he wants to box with Mayweather. He has good enough timing that he might be able to be competitive for 3-4 rounds, but Floyd probably starts landing clean counters after that.
Many of us would love nothing more than for Cotto to pull off the upset, but I just don't see it happening.

Steward would be all wrong for Cotto to have a chance to beat Mayweather. Steward style is all about "boxing tall." Even if a fighter isn't tall.
So you'd have Cotto trying to out-box Mayweather. And as we all know, nobody is going to out box Mayweather. Everyone that has tried has gotten an embarrassing boxing lesson.
Cotto needs to fight like Castillio did in the first fight. Just balls out, throw tons of punches and don't let up. Even if most of your punches are missing and getting countered.

He better dust off the left hook the body he threw earlier in his career.

That will be difficult because Mayweather keeps his arms tucked to his side like damn sheild. He'd love Cotto to go to the body so he can counter the shit out of him with flush shots.
Volume punching is the only shot he's got. He needs to throw close to 100 punches a round.

he isn't a volume puncher.
Compubox the 5 fights prior to Margacheato laying the beatdown on Cotto: 57.1 punches per round.
He never was a volume puncher.
As for Mayweather keeping his arms to his side. He doesn't do that half as much as he used to.
He hasn't fought the same in his last few fights. Instead of shoulder roll and defensive posture, he spends more time in more traditional stance and relying on superior hand eye coordination.
