THE LAST OF THE GREAT PROMOTERS
yes dispite what you think of them arum and king are the last of a dying breed.the great promoter.arum still does a great job.for the past several years king on a rare occasion has.both were involved in the whos who of big fights.majestic promotions to boot.arum still spends his own money in helping developing a fighter..king in his hey day was a master of coning governments or outside investers to suport his big ideas and successfull ones i may add..zaire venzuwela jamica japan.he brought his con and genuis all over the world.
promtion is a dying art.golden boy yes is big perhaps even a decent promoter but not great nor will they ever be.the rest mostly are mediocre or plan bad.duva is good but small scale compared to the great ones..i cant speak for warren or southerland but from what i see there very capable so there good not great.
both king and arum created the big hype but also matched thaty hype by delevering the good or great or shocking fight.by the way being a con man is a trait thats a must for a great promoter..today they rely on tv money ppv money site fees etc etc to back up there gaurantees and they promote less..
gone are the greats of jimmy jacobs harry markson who had weekly good to great fights at the garden with sell outs or near sell outs.gone is the enterprize of sam silverman in the providence boston area or a norm rothchild in the small but succesfull market in syracuse.gone is jim norris who behind the sceens deliverd for chicago and gone is the greatest of them all in tex richard.
promoters who relied on matchmaking skills and guts without big tv money or site fees.it was delivering seats in the arenas weekly.
tex richard layed out some huge big time money gurantees with his own cash.not tv not casino money..one true story i forget the fight but it was a big one and was to be held in a big city.bids were sealed and to be opened on lets say a friday at noon.tex walked in ten mintutes before and they said tex wherews your bid..tex said to the effect ive got mine here but ill open it for you guys after you open the bids.they agreed.after the bids were opened they asked tex where your bid.tex said right here.he opened up the suitcase and there was either 500 000 or a million in cash i forget which one..tex said boys thoses other bids is talk.mine isnt.he got the fight dispite coming third in the so called bids.
want boxing to be great again.it starts with great promoters.thoses who put there money up where there mouth is.the old saying money talks bullshit walks.we need promoters who can promote without tv money site fees.thats a bonus those fees are.deliver us a REAL fight and often.
any thoughts guys.

Re: THE LAST OF THE GREAT PROMOTERS
Good post Dmar, I agree with you. What killed boxing promoting was PPV. Before promoters got spoiled with letting a network like HBO or Shotime sell the fight for them (which is essentially what happens now) they had to sell the fight themselves.
That means selling tickets. Which means putting the fight where the people want to see it. Which means understanding what the people want - which is the essence of promoting anything. It's all about marketing: if you don't know who you're selling to you'll never sell anything.
Promoters like Golden Boy are just trying to leverage connections with networks and putting their fights in LA or Vegas (for the site fees) and end up having to give away tickets, when they should be in New York or Montreal or wherever people might actually care to watch.
It does take guts, but until the "low hanging fruit" of PPV money is gone I don't see anyone around willing to take a risk with some big cards in different locations that aren't so reliant on TV money. As evil as he might be, no one is thinking as "outside the box" as Don King used to, that's for sure.
