David Haye Talks Retirement, Klitschko, Acting Career
Posted by: Nick Parkinson on 10-30-2010.

By Nick Parkinson, courtesy of The Daily Star

DAVID HAYE is taking acting tips from Michael Caine and Jason Statham as he plans to hit Hollywood in a year’s time.

The Hayemaker reckons he can emulate the success of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who transformed himself from a wrestler into a movie star. But Haye, 30, will not launch his new career until he hangs up his gloves 12 months from now.

Haye’s plan is to beat fellow Briton Audley Harrison at Manchester’s MEN Arena on November 13 and then face either of the Klitschko brothers – Wladimir or Vitali – in a world title unification clash.

But Haye, 30, is adamant he will not box after 2011 as he intends to go from bruiser to luvvie.

He has already mixed with celebrities from the film world since winning the WBA world heavyweight title from Russian giant Nikolai Valuev a year ago.

He has met film legend and fellow south Londoner Caine at a film premiere and socialised with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels star Statham.

Haye has seen how former Wimbledon hard-man Vinnie Jones has reinvented himself as an America-based actor and is now dreaming of becoming an action hero himself.

He said: “I’m going to be a movie star, the decision has been made.

“I’m going to break Hollywood and be the next big action hero.

“I’ve had a few bits but I have said to everyone I am retiring next year so I’m going to focus 100 per cent on this next year because it is huge for me, there are big unification fights.

“Lennox Lewis mixed the two by having a role in Ocean’s Eleven and came unstuck in his next fight.

“So to learn from other people’s mistakes, I won’t be mixing the two.

“The luvvies in the film industry cannot be any worse than the people in the boxing industry.

“Me and Adam Booth, my trainer, have managed to dodge our way through this dirty business and past all the sharks and achieved our goals.

“I haven’t given up on the Klitschkos at all, though.

“I think the fight will happen next year. I am serious about retiring so they can’t string it out any longer. But I will beat them.”

And Haye is not the only British boxing star hoping to break into films.

Former world super-middleweight king Joe Calzaghe, who retired last year, is having acting lessons and Haye admits he may do the same once he hangs up his gloves.

He said: “I haven’t done any acting before but I know I would be a great actor.

“I have been talking to a few acting coaches and they thought, ‘Yeah, you’ve got it’.

“Joe Calzaghe came to the gym the other day for a workout and he said he was taking acting lessons so, hopefully we can go down the same path.”

Wow this guy is full of himself. He is going to be an action star. The Klitschkos have strung this out??? How so??? I'm pretty sure he ran from them for the last 12 months, but maybe I've had my head in the sand.

i dont care if haye retires or not. its not like he fights much anyways and if he doesnt want to fight then thats his decision. he just wont really be remembered in a few years. and why does he think that he will be such a great actor?

Yeah right, Haye says he'll fight a Klitschko after he fights Oddly, fat chance of that, instead of getting into acting, Haye should market himself in the gay porn industry, something he already has experience doing.

It just kills me that there are thousands of unemployed actors in California, NY, Ga., and all around the country who can't get a job. Some of these people are as talented as anyone you've ever seen. A boxer comes in with no acting experience (Even David's portrayal of a fighter was questionable.) and gets tips from actors who know how hard this inudustry is? Then they welcome him in? Wow. No sweat off my back. I'm a filmmaker, not an actor. I just think my industry has no honor at all.

Now I understand "Howard Cossell's" rage at what he correctly titled, "Jockocracy." This, of course, was when Jocks entered his booth and he felt slighted (as well he should've.). Just a little tip. If you really want a good laugh, listen to any fight Cossell announced with a fighter. His put downs are hilarious. I believe he was announcing the Foreman - Lyle fight with "Ken Norton."
Howard Cossell: "Ken, you can attest to George's power better than anyone. You recall that fight in "Caracus" when he made fast work of you."

That said, some of the best announcers I've ever heard have turned out to be ex athletes. Dan Diedroff (spelling), Sean O'Grady, etc. But the jump over to acting has never worked. Everyone from Jim Brown to O.J. (Killer) Simpson has stunk up the screen. Ever see "Ken Norton" in Mandingo? Granted, he had a good time making that glorified porno flick, but c'mon. This is bullshit. And Michael Caine of all people bringing David in? Wow.

Please don't think that I'm saying just because you played football or boxed, that eliminates you from acting. Burt Reynolds, John Wayne and many other fine actors were ex ball players. But they dropped their sport and spent many years developing their talent and trying to make it in the industry. Berry Gordy was an ex boxer. So was James Brown. Same story with them. My problem is, when you make it big in a sport, then cross over to acting with no training or experience and just walk over much more talanted and dedicated people who have given their lives to this industry. Yeah, I know life ain't fair, but this is crazy.

I liked "The Duke" as well. Nobody played the cowboy like Wayne or Eastwood.

McClintock-decent Wayne flick.

John Ford's calvary trilogy is awesome. Great work by Wayne in all three films.
Wayne's two best performances in westerns are Red River and The Searchers.

Most of his later roles were fun but didn't require much more than Wayne to show up and play the same role.

Shakespeare even works as a Western doesn't he? Amazing.

Love John Wayne. But I like the Quiet Man best...it's an Irish thing.
