Wow monster left hook dropped Mares. Was not expecting that.

Any thoughts on what's next for Mares after this? Rematch, maybe Donaire?

Santa Cruz also look very good on the undercard. Quick night of fights.

im not saying that it was a terrible stoppage, but i think that you need to give high class fighters in big fights the benefit of the doubt. yes he was hurt, but he didnt look out of it. also, if he would have gotten up, the round would have been over and he could have recovered.

mares is definitely a class act though by saying that he was alright but doesnt blame the ref. he has had very tough fights his last 7 fights. i think that hands down he has had the best resume in his last 7 fights then anyone in boxing. he will come back and show that he is a top p4p fighter.

Yeah, I can't stand when the ref doesn't at LEAST give the fighter a chance to get up. I realize this is something they are trained to do by the athletic commission, because there is less of a health risk if they are able to stay in a relaxed state on the ground. However, I think Mares would have beat the count and then the ref could have evaluated the situation while he was standing.

There should be a rematch.

I don't know. I thought the stoppage was fine. He allowed Mares up after the first knock down and he got put right back down. His eyes didn't seem to be focusing well. I'd be happy watching a rematch to see how Abner responds to being KO'd.

looking at the replay of the second knockdown, mares' eyes and face looked fine. he was obviously hurt but didnt seem completely out of it or anything. ive seen people who looked way worse continue. he definitely wasnt out on his feet when he got up from the first knockdown.

like i said though, if there was still a minute or more left of the round i would have been fine with it because i would agree that he wouldnt have been able to last, but by the time he got up, the round would have been over.

I see your point and it makes sense but at where do you draw the line as a ref with factoring how much time is remaining in the round or fight? For example in Bute vs Andrade is it okay to say there was only a couple seconds left so let it go to the cards or end the fight. It's something that is very subjective and either way I wouldn't be upset.

I'll have to rewatch the end of the fight, I remember thinking he looked really out of it but I'd had a couple drinks so maybe it was my eyes not to focused.

ES your correct.time isn't a factor at all.the ref doesn't have a stop watch on.after the first knockdown the ref gave mares more time then needed.he asked several questions.mares legs had no bounce in them.he attempted to fight back with punches that had nothing on them and he was wide open to be hit.he was hurt and in deep trouble.if his head was clear he would of danced jabed ran.held on etc etc.he attempted none of that.he was fortunate he got hit with one half way decent shot a right before the second knockdown.
mares eyes were sort of wondering until the count of 4 or so then as he attempted to rise they seemed to focus but the ref halted the fight.
im ok with the stoppage and I was rooting for mares.mares may not of been out on his feet after the first knockdown but he was spent.that punch did damage big time.he had no coordination no proper stance to defend himself after the first knockdown.his actions were based on instinct not a clear head.he was put down fast again because of his position which is one of a defenceless fighter.based on that I would not have a problem with the ref saying that's it immediately when the second knockdown occurred.
the ref saved mares from more punishment if round 2 did happen.career changing punishment perhaps.

i thought the stoppage was the right call. that left hook on the first KD was a monster shot. he got up but clearly was out of it. just how he was fighting back showed he was on queer street, he didnt look like himself in there. then he got KDd again, looked completely out of it on the mat for a few seconds, regained his focus and got up but by then it was too late, the eyes dont always tell the whole story. god forbid the ref lets it continue and he eats another monster shot and is seriously hurt because he wasnt able to properly defend himself. sometimes you have to be cautious as a ref. after the first KD he showed nothing really other than flailing punches. even without the 2nd KD i think the stoppage was coming soon. hell of an upset for gonzalez. tough beat for mares but thats boxing, 1 punch can change not only a fight but a career. hope to see the kid rebound

on another note, both fighters were extremely classy after the fight. gonzalez a very respectful and gracious winner. mares gracious in defeat. great sportsmanship. thats what i like to see, as corny as it may be

its as i said, i didnt think it was a terrible stoppage and i know that the ref couldnt see how much time was left on the clock so i cant really blame him. im just stating that i have seen many fighters recover from when they were really hurt. who knows if mares would have recovered. maybe he wouldnt have. but maybe he would have and ended up winning the fight. i just wish that he would have had the opportunity to at least stand up and be able to at least try to see if he could recover for round 2.

he was very hurt by the first knockdown. as DMAR pointed out, look at the legs. Mares is a mentally strong guy but when he got up he was very hurt. His legs were stiff as hell. I have no problem with the stoppage.
