FLOYDS FIGHT PPV WISE. DISAPPOINTING?

Post  dmar5143 on Fri May 10, 2013 4:02 pm

I thought about what captain said about the movie theater crowd the other night where he saw the fight.he said for the cotto fight it was 80 percent full.the RG fight 20 percent full.that means in that location the cotto fight was 4 times bigger..to me because it was on a mexican holliday means nothing.floyd can sell tickets anytime..yes the mares fight added a little spice but if alvarez or chavez was on the card it gets 300-500 000 more ppvs.mexican starpower..RG has none with the Mexican folks.like when pac fought clottey it drew 800 000 .a good number but a flop for pac since clottey has zero following.it was all pac.
the last pac -marquez fight they reported 1 million 25 thousand ppvs and said a last minute surge put them over the top.this is a fight that had a rivalry.marquez does have a Mexican following.i don't believe that fight did a million..they fudged a few numbers a little to say that.
the red flag here is the place where captain went.you can say there like voting places where a turnout is representative of a overall turnout..
ive been doing a little research and the rumor mill says under a million..even Shaffer said the numbers were a disappointment..thell say it did ohhhh 1 million 75 thousand but in reality its under a million.the big Mexican holiday and all it flopped..hey 900 000 is not a flop but with a Floyd or the old pac it is..32 million dollar upfront fee underperformed..horay im glad..why.maybe boxing fans are waking up.its no longer a automatic for pac or Floyd ..alvarez has a very good following.he can add a ton to the sales.the fight will be viewed by a good amount of folks as competitive to some degree..take away the Mexican holliday against Garcia whats that fight do.800 000 maybe.showtimes gonna wish it didn't make that deal..its needs a Floyd -alvarez fight next or its red face time.

the problem is that even though many people will still buy the PPV just because floyd or pac is the main fight, doesnt mean that there are hundreds of thousands of other people that wont buy the fight. even though guerrero earned his shot more or less, he really isnt a name. outside of actual boxing fans, most people dont know who guerrero is. most casual fans probably hadnt even heard of him before the fight.

the hype wasnt very big before the fight either because guerrero could only do so much without a name. he doesnt really have anything to bring to the table in terms of making a match with floyd intriguing. for example, even though ortiz isnt very good, he has good punching power. so at least there is that sell that maybe he can hurt mayweather. guerrero just has nothing that stands out so it was hard to sell.

i know that floyd would never not do a PPV fight, but a fight against anybody on regular showtime would get millions and millions of viewers. but floyd wouldnt get as much money either so it wouldnt happen.

at first they said it wasnt a million and then said it was. maybe they are just making up numbers. they still havent come out with an actual number yet.

Overhead. Floyd carries a lot of overhead because of his upfront money and back end take. The window between failure and success is very small when the payout to one fighter is so much. HBO IMO let him go because of this.

well yea but at $70 a pop 1 mill buys is 70mil off ppv alone, his guarantee is 32 guerrero got 5 that leaves a lot of cash not even counting tix, the closed circuit stuff, and the ads all over the ring. i know the promo and stuff costs money but i cant imagine that not being enough to go around and put them in the green. i mean im sure there are a lot of other factors but that seems like a nice chunk of change

.
BG there are a lot of factors.expensive ones.first half that money or 35 million goes to the cable outlets that showed the fight.comcast time warner direct tv etc etc.thats there take and they pay for there promotional advertisements.the other half goes to the fighters promoters and showtime..the promoters are not puting up this kind of guarantee for nothing.the risk is high and even though Floyd wants to eat all of it they get a share.showtime gets a piece of the action also and there advertising money has to be recouped also.there not doing it for free for the grand priveldge of showing a Floyd fight.by the way RG got 3 million plus a small possible upside.the gate money is factored in by the way.a site fee is paid by them for the fight and they accurately estimate the gate needed to recoup there cash plus security etc etc and factored in also is the local advertiment for the fight to pay the promoters back..they can claim as I stated in the beginning of this thread it will do over a million when all is said and done.it will fall short like the pac -marquez fight did dispite claims of a big last minute surge to put it over the top.
when you factor in overseas tv rights the fight may have a profit but not what was expected.as hardcore pointed out the risk factor is big considering there end of the take for putting up big cash.

The numbers shown don't take into consideration all of the bars & clubs that buy the fight at X-amount per person according to occupancy. Some places pay over $2000 for the fight and for Floyd, a lot more places will buy it.

the ones providing the ppv (cable company) gets a big cut.

A few boxing writers that understand how the business work calculated that a million ppv buys would be break even at best.

Fat Dan Rafael (whom I loathe) stated in his Friday chat that sources (that he trusts) have told him it is less than 1 million buys.

I gave a detailed accurate breakdown where the money goes.at 1 million buys it falls short.simple math.add the gate to the total it breaks even.the fight will draw a little profit because of overseas tv rights which is not prime time but 4 or 5 am.other ancillary rights gives it a minor profit.under a million its breakeven time or a tiny tiny profit.certainly not worth the huge risk.

again the report captain gave on attendance where he went is a good indicator how the fight did.they will use all the face saving PR in a few weeks to say its over a million.my guess pr wise is 1 million seventy five thousand and they may say that in 3 weeks when they claim all the totals are in.thats bullshit too.or hopefully in 3 weeks no one will ask.
look you can count 75-100 million votes in less then 8 hours election time..if anyone thinks it takes 3 weeks to get a total they still believe in the easter bunny.everything is computerized example lets say west palm beach did 1900 ppvs charlotte 2900 etc etc.every time theres a buy its recorded electronically.its not done by hand.

ive always wondered the same thing. it seems like they should know the PPV numbers by the next day. it shouldnt take a month to figure them out.
