Boxer Robert Guerrero, who is slated to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. on May 4 in the main event of a Showtime pay-per-view card at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, was arrested Thursday morning at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport for attempting to board an airplane with a handgun.
According to multiple reports, Guerrero, 30, was arrested after trying to bring an unloaded gun onto a Delta flight bound for Las Vegas. The New York Post reported that the gun was a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson semi-automatic. However, the local NBC affiliate reported the gun was a 9 mm Smith & Wesson. Guerrero had no ammunition with him.
Charges against Guerrero, who was in New York to promote his fight with Mayweather, are pending.
Robert Guerrero turned 30 on Wednesday (Getty)The status of the fight is unknown, though the arrest is unlikely to impact it. Luis DeCubas Jr., Guerrero's manager, could not be reached for comment. He was reportedly with Guerrero when the boxer was taken into custody. The voicemail on DeCubas' cell phone was full and could not accept messages. He did not immediately respond to a text message.
Showtime spokesman Chris DeBlasio said the network would decline comment at this time.
Guerrero appeared on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "The 700 Club" on Monday along with his wife, Casey. He spoke openly of his Christian faith and of how he got through his wife's life-threatening illness. On Tuesday, he had a news conference with New York area media.
Stephen Espinoza, the executive vice president and general manager of Showtime Sports, lauded Guerrero at the Tuesday news conference.
"We wanted to make sure the East Coast knew about Robert, knew how classy he is and how wonderful he is as an individual."
More to come on this as more details become available.

I heard a rumor that he brought the gun for a photo shoot, I can't confirm that, but Guerrero fucked himself pretty hard here. I doubt this situation will prevent him from fighting May 4th. Being ignorant of the law isn't a defense. I wouldn't be surprised he didn't know he could board a plane with a gun. A lot of boxers aren't the smartest people in the world.

I'm a gun control person and yet this is such nonsense.....a gun that is legal, UNLOADED with no ammo, which was declared at the ticket counter????? Guns are legal.....how else would you transport the gun? It's like buying a gun at a sporting goods store and then getting arrested on the way home for having a weapon. STUPID!

im confused on this story because they said that they arent allowed to have guns on the flight he was on, yet he said that he checked it legally. when he was going through the procedure of checking it, wouldnt somebody be like, you cant have that on the plane. maybe im just confused about the procedures of checking in guns on planes because ive never done it.

good point and the DA is saying Guerrero is facing 4 felonies! Then the American justice system asks why they incarcerate the most people in the world and their prisons are over over crowded. Guerrero had no ill intent bringing the gun and declared it. The gun was unloaded but still they're going to prosecute him. I'd be surprised if Guerrero doesn't get jail time. Plexico Burress got jail time for shooting himself lolShaun wrote:A comment taken from ESPN.com

Re: For crying out loud...Guerrero arrested
The only difference in this case is the location. He legally declared the gun on the trip east & tried to do the same on the way home. If the DA doesn't see that, it's a bunch of crap.
There is a complete absence of malice in this case....

Re: For crying out loud...Guerrero arrested
call me crazy but people make way too big of a deal about guns. it is his constitutional RIGHT to bear arms, states should not be able to overule the constitution in any way shape or form. how a gun can be registered in 1 state and not all is beyond me, why is there not a national registry? why do different states have different gun laws? makes no sense whatsoever. the guy didnt even have any bullets to put in the gun, i get that it could be used as a scare tactic, but he disclosed it to the airline as he is supposed to! this should not even be news, nevermind a crime as far as im concerned he did absolutely nothing wrong
