Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fined $900K

Post  Frank on Fri Mar 01, 2013 9:12 am

The follloiwng is from an article written about Chaves from ESPN.

"Former middleweight titlist Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was suspended for nine months and fined a whopping $900,000 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission on Thursday for failing a drug test following his loss to champion Sergio Martinez last fall in Las Vegas.

Chavez tested positive for marijuana following his unanimous decision defeat to Martinez on Sept. 15 in one of the biggest fights of 2012, his second offense in Nevada since 2009. Chavez had his hearing on Thursday at the regular monthly meeting of the Nevada commission after his case had been repeatedly put off
."

I'll remain silent. It's very hard, but I think I can do it.

Its a very heavy fine, but I think it has to do with him being a repeat offender. Lets all remember Chavez jr skipped out on 2 consecutive post fight drug tests before the Martinez fight, and those are the only ones we know about, it may have been more. This is well deserved karma.

best twitter line I saw when this came out, was along the lines of, "Damn that is a heavy fine for Uncle Sulaiman to pay"

it was his second offense of an illegal substance. it should be a huge fine. one time is one thing, but twice is just inexcusable.

If you look at it from an official point of view in respect to the rules of professional boxing, you're exactly right, Power.

However, this is my point. I think the objective of testing for drugs (at least in boxing) is to keep an athlete from having an unfair advantage over his opponent. With the major PED problem that this sport has, I hardly think that weed should be taken this seriously due to the fact that it does not give anyone an unfair advantage. Rules are rules, however I'm challenging this one as being rather senseless.

Boxing is in a state of anarchy at the moment and is presently the most self-destructive sport I've seen in my life time. We have commissions in every state, boxers using PEDs in major events and getting away with it, boxers forming private relationships with private testing institutions that seem less than honest and so on. Just for the record, we actually have individual fighters making rules for the drug testing for their own fights!!!!

If you believe that we can afford to spend this much attention to something (Weed) that virtually would have no effect on a fight (unless of course, the combatant came in high which in that case would lead to him getting knocked out.) I understand that. Rules are necessary to organize anything. However with the state boxing is in today, I think the rules are misplaced. My call.

This is to ensure he'll never fight in Vegas again. He's not going to pay this fine. He'll fight in Texas and Mexico for the remainder of his career if he even chooses to fight again.

..from what i understand nevada can still reach out and attach a lien or something on his purse if he fights in other states.surely a appeal process on the fine should be avalible but its not..hardcore i hope your right that he can stiff nevada and fight elsewhere.make an offer of 250 000 and see what happens.if nothing happens and you can stiff them i would.i dont like chavez one bit but i feel this is too much.

I would bet all my money on Martinez, that's would I would do. Chavez jr is just a spoiled kid and its the reason hes pissing away his boxing career. He's immature and not very professional. He has no discipline and no respect for anyone, not his trainer or father. You would have thought his DUI was a wake up call, I hope this was. Chavez is not a bad fighter to watch anymore. Hes progressed to the best he can be and hes a top 5 middleweight. He has to clean up his act if he hopes to be a better fighter.

Exactly....we watch professional sports to seem them done at the highest level. Jr is not even attempting that.

maybe i wouldnt be so harsh on him if it werent for his DUI's and his skipping other post fight drug tests. so in reality, he probably would have failed most of them if he wasnt able to avoid them.

again i dont like chavez at all..but PP lets get some facts correct.duis is plural.i thought he had just one..skipping out on drug tests.again plural..one of them in question was in texas where chavez claimed he waited over a hour to do the test.from what i remember neither fighter was tested.the reason given was the texas commish said lol they simply forgot to do the tests.
by the texas comish saying that it eliminates the thought that chavez ran out to avoid the test.again neither fighter was tested and no one is accusing the other fighter of runing out on the test.maybe your correct saying he probably would of failed a test.i said a test not most of them which implies several does it not.
again i feel frank is correct that almost a million dollar fine is overkill for weed.its not peds.i havent heard one fighter or boxing writer say that the fine is fair.

i just did a little research on testing..texas tested no one on the chavez card including vasquez -donaire because the forgot to make arrangements with a testing lab to test samples if any..chavez fought at least 8-9 other times in vegas three in california and twice in ny city.the rest in texas or mexico which is understandable because of his name that can draw folks.i cant see him runing out of the testing there in cal ny or nevada without harsh penalites and publicity..
i was shocked to learn that in nevada testing is not manditory unless its for a title shot or if the fighters are to appear on tv.in texas from what i read testing is sort of new...this means that most fighters are not tested at all in several of there fights including chavez at times...what a joke folks.boxing litterly doesnt even have a standard manditory pee test for all fighters.

He really is a spoiled brat with a feeling of entitlement. Treating him this way is an embarrassment to boxing. How many other fighters get this treatment? Not even the offspring of other greats were treated like he has been. Fuck Jr.......Let him pay the fine. If other athletes fail a test for weed, they get suspended & lose money too. 2nd & 3rd offenses can cost them more than 900K depending on their contracts. It's time for Jr to grow up.

In Chavez Jrs fight with Lee there was a drug test. HBO even stated it. Chavez said he couldn't take a prefight test because he couldn't pee and said he would provide one after the fight. After the fight he just ditched the drug test all together. I even remember Chavez and Roach didn't even want to weigh his gloves and the Texas commission didn't do anything about it. Chavez has gotten away with so much. Its one of the reason I really dislike him as a fighter. There is a lot of sketchy business with him. I also remember in one of his fights in Mexico, Chavez and his handlers tampered with the scales and no one did shit.
