Pavlik retires

Post  captainanddew on Sat Jan 19, 2013 4:44 pm

first part of article from fat dan:
NEW YORK -- Former middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik, saying that he is concerned about the long-term medical impact of continuing to fight and no longer motivated, told ESPN.com on Saturday that he is retiring from boxing.

"When you stay in the sport too long you have health problems. That's a big, big thing for me," Pavlik said. "I'm not talking about now. I'm talking about in the future. I'm talking about when I'm 55 or 60. What's gonna happen to me then? Why take any more chances, especially in that sport. It's a brutal sport and you never know what can happen.

"I won the world title, I defended my title, I was champ for three years and I made good money. Why take the chance of medical problems? That's a big part of it. I also don't think the drive is there anymore. I'm moving on to a new chapter in my life."

He'll be back. I imagine he pissed away quite a lot of money in his non-stop drunken stupor.

Well he made a lot of money during his career, but no doubt he'll come back. When they offer you 6 digit figures to fight, it's hard to turn it down.

Well with this retirement, at least we don't have to see a fight between him and Ward. It wasnt a fight I was thrilled to see and HBO now doesn't have to waste their budget on it. Now I think he'll get ready to fight the winner of Froch-Kessler in late 2013 when he's healed from surgery.

WOW.this came out of nowhere.i can understand the disappointment when the ward fight and a payday well beyound a million dollars went out the window as a setback.what caused his lack of motivation was that no big fight was there to replace it.butes folks are extra cautious and pavlik easly could of got a million plus for that fight.same with carl or kessler but there going against each other.
im glad to see he has saved his cash and his wife is correct about future medical problems after 30 years old especialy if you view training as a chore.i hope he can avoid the temptation of a seven figure offer after retiring for litterly the second time.injuries and rehab ill call the first as involuntary.i believe him when he says hes on the straight and narrow and hopefully going back to the youngstown area has no pitfalls.
training with garcia he worked hard and got himself ready for one final run.i dont forsee that motivation returning again in that needed effort thats a must.
im a fan of kellys even during the 2 plus year period where he screwed up business wise and personel wise.heres hoping he can stay retired unlike many fighters who dont..good luck kelly.

this guy might be the rare exception. Other than having a few too many drinks, he didn't seem like the normal spending athlete. He was still sleeping on his parent's couch after winning the title.

It is a question of how you live. If he bought a nice, normal house, then he has alot of money left. It is when you buy a house that is twice as big as you need, buy 6 cars, tons of drugs, etc..... that you end up broke.

I hope he did save his money and doesn't come back.
