did no fighter fight anybody any good those years? here is his resume for those years:

1958:joe erskine, heinz neuhaus, eddie machen. he beat them all. but other than machen, i havent heard of the other 2. looking at boxrec, it doesnt look like they even beat anybody of any worth. even machen at that point was undefeated but his best win was against joey maxim and had a draw against foley. i guess johansson KO'd him in 1 so it looked good. he did KO all of them so maybe people just thought he was better than he was. if someone older could clarify and tell me something about these fighters it would be appreciated,

1959: floyd patterson. yes, only 1 fight. yes, he did win the title but it was only 1 fight! maybe at that time people thought that patterson was better than he actually was. i mean, if somebody beat floyd patterson today i would count it as a good win but nowhere near a win alone to win you fighter of the year.

maybe johansson was just a really good prospect so people just gave him the benefit of the doubt. i dont know. i wasnt around back then.

There was no thing greater in the world in 1959 than the heavyweight championship. It mattered more than anything else. Winning it, was enough.

58 was a "who else?" type year.

..BL is correct on the win for the title.the who else apllies also.yes fighters fought each other of course.robinson had just 1 fight in wining the fight of the year against basilio but ingos ko a destruction of number 1 machen was the impressive factor..virgil akins had a great year koing 4 elite welters.logart vince martinez and demarco winning the vacant welter title.the problem is he closed the year out with a 10 rd non title loss to flanagan a tough good cutie who fought the whos who in that era and then a loss to don jordan in a boring fight which even at age 15 i felt somethings wrong there.the mob may of said it aint your night kid..florintine fernandez burst into the middle rankings with 7 spectaclar kos wins but nobody of note.giardello beat 3 topmiddles but lost on cuts to spider webb..BLS who else is correct.the machen ko stuned the boxing world.

thanks for the insight. for some reason i was looking at the list of fighters of the year and was in shock when i realized that he won it 2 years in a row. i feel like most fighters can be fortunate and win it 1 year because of a good year but 2 years is a big deal.
