MARES Empty MARES

Post  powerpuncher Sun Nov 11, 2012 3:23 am

mares is a come forward fighter that just throws whatever punch he can whether or not it lands. moreno is a very good fighter and i thought that mares pulled off a good win. i thought that fight was close but clear for mares. i think that mares beats donaire. i actually think that moreno might beat donaire. i love how mares called him out though after the match. we will see if the fight actually happens though.

and did anybody watch the lara-martyson(sp?) match? i want to know what happened.

I like and dislike Mares. I admire his work ethic, but his recklessness rubs me the wrong way. I will be pulling for Donaire if that match gets made. I think he will catch Mares FLUSH in his wild barrage of punches.

I think that fight might have gone differently at 118. I was definitely impressed with how Mares kept Moreno off balance and on his back foot the whole night. He completed negated Moreno's boxing. I'm not sure why more guys don't fight like him and crowd space. He's a great fight. But I also think he's tailored made for Donaire. If he gets caught with flush shots like Moreno landed (and he will), he's going to sleep. At least we know he won't back down. Doesn't know how to.

I was a big Mares fan. Fun style. Nice kid, etc...

I rewatched a couple of Mares's fights today.

Mares goes low way too much.

Mares will put his head down at times when he is coming in. Guys push his head down to protect themselves from getting jacked in the chin with the top of his head.

I feel like Mares is either dirty or just plain reckless.

I don't normally pull for Donaire. Against Mares I will be up off the couch yelling at him to knock that dirty motherfucker out.

I missed everything but the 12th but it sounds like Mares is starting to go into Tim Bradley, BHop, Hatton, or Holyfield area of dirtiness. It is amazing some of these fighters don't get penalized more. The ref not warning/taking away a point for their tactics hurts more than the point they get to keep. Fighting dirty is an unfair advantage and the other fighter starts either looking for that instead of boxing or just plain old retaliation. My example for Bradley is of course Devon Alexander. If Bradley got a warning early and the butts stopped, the fight would probably have been close. Instead Devon mentally shrunk from the butts and never manned up against Timmy.

I thought the fight was pretty close. I had the point deduction and the knockdown as the difference in the fight. BTW HOW the fuck did the non dirty fighter get a deduction? What a joke.

i think that its the opposite. donaire is tailor made for mares. ill tell you why. moreno isnt the same type of fighter as donaire. he is very defensive and really wants to pop shot his opponents and make them miss. he is slick. donaire uses his speed to throw hard shots but he doesnt throw in bunches at all. against moreno, mares wasnt able to land a ton because of moreno's defense. the last however many donarie fights, his opponents have stayed back and not come in. mares will totally throw him off but mares will land a lot of shots during the fight. i think that mares would probably go down during the fight sometime but he would end up winning.

i think that mares is more reckless than dirty and i dont at all mind that as long as the ref is consistent. i agree with sooner that the point deduction against moreno was terrible because i thought the ref was doing a good job before that. my problem with the whole thing is that dirty fighters always get praised after they retire. during their career, people complain. for example, sandy saddler is an ATG. he was very dirty and people talk about that all the time and joke about it how he would hit low and rabbit punch all of the time. now we look at him and say that he was such a great fighter. would he have been if he werent so dirty?

same as holyfield. he is a very dirty fighter but is still known as an ATG fighter and we can all look past that. now mares is doing it and we are saying that he is dirty and that he shouldnt do what he does. somebody should low blow him back if they dont like it. we shouldnt be hating on fighters like mares because he is a warrior and has fought great competition throughout his career (better than almost any active fighter).

Mares vs Donaire will be very competitive and a damn great fight if Arum lets it happen. I believe Moreno will win a lot of rounds against Donaire, but Donaire can still put Mares on his ass if he is able to land those bombs he throws. It will be a very tough fight for both of them, but I can see it Mares by UD or Donaire by KO early. If Mares can take Donaires punches, he wins easy.

I think Mares gets away with football tactics that have no place in boxing.

And he may be dirty to boot.

If I was training someone for Mares, there would be plenty of work on spinning a guy who likes to rush in, short chopping counters, uppercuts and especially using elbows and going low on the opposite side of the ref.

It is after all, about self-defense first...
