My idea to fix boxing Empty My idea to fix boxing

Post  powerpuncher Wed Nov 07, 2012 9:32 am

i was thinking about the main problems with boxing and how to fix it so that there are set rules so that fights can and will be made.

1. back to one title per division. that is the most important thing to me. it sets apart an actually champion whether or not he is the best in the weight class. it makes an actual goal to strive for. i think that we would have already gotten a pac-mayweather fight if someone was the champion at welterweight and not have them both hold trinkets so that they both claim to be champs.

1a. along with the 1 belt, i think that the champion should always get the bigger cut of the purse. i dont care who the cash cow is, the champion deserves to make more money because he earned it. i think that this would solve a lot of money issues and anything beyond that could be up for discussion. i just think that if everybody knew for sure that the champion got the bigger cut, a lot of money negotiations would be non existant.

1b. also along with the one belt is the amount of times a year you must defend the title. i say that you must defend it 3 times a year. once against the #1 contender, once against a top 10 opponent, and once against whoever the champion chooses. you must defend it 3 times otherwise you lose the belt. with the new money rule in place (getting the higher share if you are champion) would make fighters not want to lose the belt because the belt equals more money and more prestige. this means that a fighter will have to fight through an injury and be forced to be active. if by the years end he hasnt followed the regulations, he gets stripped and the #1 and #2 contenders fight for the vacant belt and split the purse 50/50 no matter what.

2. get rid of half of the weight classes. take out most of the light/super weightclasses. so the weight classes would be minimum, fly, bantam, feather, light, light welter, welter, middle, light heavy, cruiser, heavy. that is 11 weight classes which is plenty. less weight classes means that each weight class has a lot more depth. plus without a lot of the in between weight classes, it becomes harder to move around weight classes so it forces fighters to clean out their divisions and for good fights to be made rather than so many fighters avoiding good fights because of a move up in weight.

3. have a very low tolerance of bad decisions. let the judges know that they will have to sit before a panel and explain round by round how they scored a fight if it was an obvious bad decision. if there is no good explanation, they get put on probation, if they do it another few times, they lose their licenses for good. i think more than anything, its not as much that the judges are bad as i believe that they get paid off or even just nudged a bit to judge a certain way. a low tolerance for bad judging can fix a lot of that.

i believe that those things right there would put boxing back on the map. i didnt include putting it back on national tv which would really make it big again then.

Add in a national body that rules over every states boxing commission and we have covered everything.

The US definitely needs this! One title per division is every fans main desire. The multiple champions bullshit is what has made boxing become a niche sport

PP some good points.one strong real ruling body with legit rankings same day weigh inns.theres a lot that needs to be done.i disagree strongly with striping a champ.championships are won and lost in the ring not by taking a belt away.also your implying a manditory or else.thats what lead to the muti champs or the lack of credibilty in boxing in the first place.overall your on the right track.

stripping to me is the only way to make sure that champions fight. otherwise we will have these fighters that claim an injury and only have 1 fight per year which should be unacceptable. and about the mandatory, you have to have a mandatory opponent otherwise we still wont get the best fights. now if the problem fixed itself (having one champion just produced the best fights) then im fine with no mandatories, but again, we arent living in the old days. fighters arent fighting 10 times a year. many years can go by with a champion maybe only fighting one good opponent.

rival tv/promoters companies stop fights

i would like to see in every boxers contract......they are allowed 1 fight on another tv station other that the one they contracted to...also can be used for promotional company

IF...ther boxers respective promoter wins a purse bid

eg: fighter A is a top rank guy and has contract to HBO......fighter B has a contract to Goldenboy and SHO

purse bid happens using new contract deal and winner gets the show.......60-40 split

promoter/tv will bid more money...fighters get paid more.....fans get best fights

thoughts?

i like the fighters being able to fight on other networks once a year. the only problem is that i wish that fighters werent under contracts at all with networks. that would make it a lot easier to make fights happen. and fighters do not need to get paid more. a majority of them are getting way overpaid anyways.

I love your ideas and I especially like the idea of only have one champ per division and having there be way less divisions. Its kind of depressing to read this though because it doesn't seem like this stuff will happen anytime soon.
