2010 Benny Briscoe passes
Bennie Briscoe, one of the best never to win a world title (when world titles meant something) and the man who presided over the last Golden Age of Boxing in Philadelphia (the 1970s) passed away today at 5.52pm EST. He had been in Temple University hospital for about a week before being moved to hospice. His wife Karen, who I have been in contact with over the last two weeks, called my at about 6.20pm EST to give me the news

i have to admit i have no clue who this guy is, maybe the elders could tell us...btw im joking about the elder comment

Ah crap. RIP Bennie.
Bad Bennie really was a bad mammajamma. He ruled the 1970's Philly middleweight roost when that city had four ranked middles all at the same time. Bennie, the Worm, Cyclone and Boogaloo. .
But he just couldn't get past Carlos Monzon or Rodrigo Valdez, though he came THIS close to knocking Monzon out in the ninth round of their first fight.
An insanely hard puncher.

Looking back I think Briscoe WAS Hagler with 10% less talent.

Briscoe was one badass Philly fighter. Not the most talented, boxingwise, but a true fighter from the heart. A 5'9" Middleweight, he packed a wallop in those gloves. There were certain fighters that he couldn't seem to get by, but they all feared him. Plus, he fought everybody, more than once.

I'm surprised how much this bums me out. Just an exemplary fighter and a good guy. I saw him KO some journeyman on a card with the Worm at the Spectrum in like 1977.

R.I.P. Bennie. The man fought the best names in the MW division and was stopped only by Valdez.IMO one of the most underrated fighters of all time.

Re: benny briscoe passes away
briscoe fought in a era of fantastic middleweights and he was one of them.tough a crowd pleaser willing to fight anyone and did and with respectable success.if a monzon valdez or hagler were not around then we might be saying the former long time middleweight champ briscoe..
i always looked forward to his fights because you knew bennie was there to fight...he is an example what some of us so called old timers long to see in fighters today.in fact that whole middleweight division was..

Bennie was the face of Philly Middleweights in the 70s. He also worked as a garbage man. He trained by running behind the garbage truck. Legendary.
